Commercial activities in most parts of the South East states were grounded, yesterday, in continuation of the sit-at-home directive by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, over the incarceration of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kalu.
Despite the success of the weekly directive, IPOB, yesterday, denied declaring a sit-at-home exercise for October 21 and 22 in any part of Igbo land, ABN TV reports.
In Aba, Abia State, schools, banks, markets, and other business centres did not open. Major roads such as Azikiwe, Faulks, Ngwa, Aba-Owerri, Obohia, Ohanku, Ikot Ekpene Road, and Aba main motor park, among others, were deserted.
Combined teams of soldiers and police officers were observed patrolling major areas of the city.
The directive also recorded total compliance as the streets and roads were completely deserted in Umuahia.
Human and vehicular traffic was very limited although there were occasional movements of tricycles and vehicles. Students and pupils stayed at home as schools did not open for studies.
Most private schools had before the weekend, reportedly communicated to their students and pupils that they would not open for Monday and Tuesday. Banks also did not open to customers while only few street shops opened for business.
Commercial and social activities in Umuahia, Abia State came to a standstill following the sit-at-home order declared by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The two-day sit-at-home was reportedly announced by IPOB as a means of hoisting the Biafra flag in the region and demanding the release of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who is currently being held in a Department of State Services, DSS, facility.
ABN TV correspondent, who monitored the situation in Umuahia, observed that although some citizens ventured out, there were no available vehicles to transport them to their destinations.
Residents expressed confusion and fear, lamenting that the sit-at-home order had paralyzed commercial activities.
The embattled Vice Chairman of Labour Party, South East zone, Mr. Ceekay Igara has broken silence following his arrest last weekend by officials of Abia State police command, saying he has done nothing wrong.
Speaking with ABN TV on Monday, Igara a former Chairman of the Labour Party in Abia state said he is only carrying out an assignment given to him by the national leadership of the Labour Party, saying the allegations of impersonation, fraud, and obtaining by false pretense leveled against him by some group in Abia is false.
He instead accused the acting Chairman of LP in Abia, Emmanuel Otti of impersonation, saying Otti has been dissolved by the national leadership of LP and cannot remain or be addressed as the acting chairman in the state.
The crisis in LP Abia state had taken a new twist ahead of the local government election in which the list of candidates cleared to stand for the election by the national leadership is different from the one cleared by the state chapter.
The court had recognized Julius Abure as the national chairman of the party, in whose faction Igara belongs to but Otti is acting on the instruction of a caretaker committee headed by a former Minister, Nenadi Sambo.
But Igara said Otti does not stand on the authority of national leadership, accusing him of impersonation.
He also denied extorting anything from anyone, insisting that the allegations were untrue.
The last of the Saturday arrest of the former acting chairman of the Labour Party in Abia state, Ceekay Igara has not been heard as the party has finally broken its silence, saying the arrest is in connection with alleged impersonation and extortion against Igara.
ABN TV report that he was since March elevated the position of South East Vice Chairman of the Party but the leadership of LP in Abia is questioning why he keeps acting as though he is the chairman of Abia State Chapter of the party.
He said, "That no law court has invalidated the existence or activities of the Acting State Chairman Mr. Emmanuel Oti and his Executive , hence it was wrong and illegal for Mr. Igara to impersonate the Chairman and his executive by carrying out their legally recognised functions without their consent or approval.
"That we are aware that following the petition, he had been invited by the police to which he refused to honour.
"That while we recognise and respect the judgement which recognised Barr. Julius Abure as the National Chairman, Abure's faction which Igara is part of has no right to flagrantly ignore the appeal and the motion for stay of execution that had been duly filed against them, by purpotedly dissolving and imposing a new Caretaker leadership on the Abia State Chapter, against the provisions of the law and the Constitution of our part", the party said.
Abia State Chapter of Labour Party said it has gone further to secure a validly issued order of court to restrain Abure, Igara and others from those activities that prompted its petition to the Police.
The party says it is peaceful and law abiding, hence every single action it has taken, including its petition to the Police against Igara which led to his arrest, has been in line with the provisions of the law.
Meanwhile, police command in the state has said it received a written petition from the Labour Party’s Acting State Chairman against Mr. Ceekey Igara and three others for alleged impersonation, obtaining by false pretence, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
"Yesterday (Saturday) 19/10/2024, detectives from the Command invited Mr. Igara, to the Command Headquarters, took his statement, and released him the same day.
At least two senior of the governing Labour Party (LP) in Abia have been arrested by heavily armed men who invaded their meeting in a hotel in Aba, ABN TV reports.
The masked men claimed to be acting on orders "from above" without naming who the above are.
Those arrested include, the party's Deputy National Chairman, Hon. Ceekay Igara and the acting State Chairman, Prince G. O. Ndubueze.
Our correspondent gathered that Prince Ndubueze was forcefully whisked away in an unmarked vehicle, a situation that has since raised concerns.
In response, Labour Party attending the meeting erupted into solidarity chants, condemning the actions as "anti-people" and decrying the situation in their state.
Protesting the action of the police, over 500 of the party marched with Ndubueze to the Aba Area police command.
In a short interview with Vour correspondent, Ndubueze said he would not bow to intimidation from Governor Alex Otti who he accused of seeking to impose chairmanship and councillorship candidates in the November 2 local government election.
“I didn't get any warrant of arrest from anywhere. I don’t even know whether they are policemen, but as law abiding citizen, I’m going with the police. But I will never bow to intimidation from Gov. Alex Otti. We won’t allow him to impose candidates in this local government election.
“This is a governor who came to power through a legitimate election, but wants to impose candidates. The Labour Party in Abia state won’t tolerate imposition.”
This development comes amidst internal party restructuring.
Emmanuel Nweze Otti was recently inaugurated as acting chairman, replacing Ceekay Igara, who was elevated to National Vice Chairman, South East.
Governor Alex Otti had months ago held a convention where an interim leadership of the party was named.
This was however voided as the court only recognised Julius Abure as the authentic national chairman of the party.
The party has also been having internal wranglings ahead of the November local government election.
The Abia State Police Command, in collaboration with the Behind Bars Human Rights Team, made a disturbing arrest today, ABN TV reports.

According to reports, medical examinations conducted at two separate hospitals in Aba confirmed injuries consistent with defilement.
The suspect is currently in police custody, and the case is under investigation.

He said: "Our legislative and executive actions clearly reflect Nigeria's commitment to harnessing STI. In 2022, Nigeria’s parliament ed the Nigeria Startup Act, a landmark legislation aimed at engineering a conducive environment for technology and innovation startups. The Act provides a legal framework that s innovation, entrepreneurship, and digital transformation in our country, helping STI startups to thrive. This law also emphasizes public-private partnerships, knowledge transfer, and incentives for investments in emerging technologies.
"Building on this momentum, under the leadership of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria is now working towards the adoption of a National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy Framework. Led by our Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, this policy will pave the way for the ethical use of AI in addressing key challenges, from automating agricultural processes to enhancing healthcare delivery.
"We envision a future where AI optimizes wage employment, rather than undermine it, ensuring that automation leads to job creation rather than destruction.
"As digital transformation accelerates, the rise of AI brings both opportunities and challenges. In Nigeria, AI is emerging as a powerful tool in sectors such as governance, financial services, and public istration. Yet, as with any technological leap, we must be mindful of the risks.
The Nigerian Super Eagles, Coach, and Technical crew were left stranded without food, WiFi, hotel accommodations, and other logistics for over 11 hours as they arrived at Libya Airport for the second leg of the qualification of CAF AFCON 2025.
This strategy was to further frustrate the Super Eagles and dissipate their energy and enthusiasm ahead of the match.
Kalu stated that the CAF must sanction Libya for treating the Super Eagles with such disdain and disregard.
"CAF must make that decision as quickly as possible to serve as a deterrent to any African country that behaves in such an irresponsible manner,” he noted.
"These things must be put to a halt forthwith. This dishonorable display of lack of class and character must stop henceforth. I condemn this horrible disregard for fellow humans. It is an utter shame that the Libya Football Federation could display such a cunning strategy. These were the things they cunningly did to Enyimba Football Club of Aba, and I fought against it. CAF must award the three (3) points to the Super Eagles of Nigeria immediately,” Kalu asserted.
Nigerian Reggae Gospel Singer, Tonneil Avo has emphasized the need for the church to serve as an economic safety net for its , ABN TV reports.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9aB1eGLQpU
In a recent video broadcast, Avo lamented the current state of Nigeria's economy, stressing that the church should be a viable alternative for financial .
"Where it will become so bad as Nigeria is, Nigeria's economy is suffering right now. They are supposed to come to the church and borrow money," he said.
Avo revealed that 56% of the world's finance is in the hands of Christians, yet this wealth is not being utilized to fellow believers. He argued that the church community should have its own "legal tender," enabling to access financial resources without relying on external institutions.
The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it has become a born-again party after all the bad elements in it have packed their baggage and left, ing either the governing party in the state Labour Party or the APC the national governing party.
Speaking with ABN TV in Umuahia, a chieftain of the PDP and a former Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu said the party is better in the absence of the people he said are seeking refuge because of things they have to hide as well as those who are hungry, looking for opportunities to feed from the table of government in power.
"Majority of the bad people we used to know in PDP, according to you people are now in APC and Labour Party, so PDP is now born-again, only those with self-confidence and integrity are now in PDP, only those who have nothing to hide are still in PDP.
"Let me be clear on this, when there is a change of government, what people do is, if you're hungry, and you need to eat from government, you rush to government in power. Again, if you have something to hide, you also rush to the party in power for protection. So all those that are hungry or have something to hide have all deserted PDP", he said.
He said top among them is the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti who was a PDP member in Arochukwu, whom he described as the former chief banker of the state's FAAC, saying the governor should know where the dead bodies are buried.
He said Abians now know if they were better off under the PDP government or under the current leadership of the Labour Party, saying PDP never told Abians that it completed 108 roads without listing them, and that PDP never told Abians that it has done a recreational centre worth N6.5bn without showing it, and never told Abians it did ICT centre of N2.4bn without showing it.
He also accused the Labour Party government of inflating road projects in the state yet highly substandard.
Kalu said a lot of PDP betrayed the party in the last election, noting that out of sense of guilt, they left the party as they can't live together with the same family they betrayed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKec-nKLqK4
In a recent interview, he expressed disappointment that youths aren't taking to the streets to protest the high cost of living, despite the economic hardship.
Amaechi emphasized that citizens should be outraged, citing the alleged embezzlement of public funds without consequences. He pointed to the situation in Edo State, questioning how politicians can campaign amidst such economic struggles. On a personal note, Amaechi shared that he can no longer afford diesel due to its high cost.
As a former governor of Rivers State and Minister of Transportation under Muhammadu Buhari's istration, Amaechi's comments have sparked mixed reactions.
Chief John Okiyi Kalu, former Commissioner for Information in Abia State, has dismissed the notion that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) failed in the state, citing the party's 12 in the House of Assembly as evidence of its strength.
In an exclusive interview with ABN TV, Kalu alleged that individuals who defected from PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Labour Party were those with questionable integrity, seeking protection or hungry for power.
He specifically mentioned Governor Alex Otti, a former PDP member, as one of those who left the party after failing to secure a ticket in 2015.
Kalu emphasized that PDP is now "born again," comprising only with self-confident integrity and nothing to hide.
He criticized defectors, including Adolphus, who allegedly campaigned against PDP candidates and collected money from the governor to host his birthday.
Looking ahead to 2027, Kalu expressed confidence in PDP's resurgence, citing its structures across the state and presence in every Abia family. He challenged the Labour Party, led by Governor Otti, to prove its commitment to integrity, given its leader's history of defections.
The Chairman of the Labour Party Caretaker Committee, Senator Nenadi Usman, on Tuesday, said her committee would appeal the judgement of the Federal High Court Abuja which upheld the Julius Abure-led leadership.
Usman in a statement she personally signed and made available to ABN TV, said she met with the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi; Abia State Governor, Governor Alex Otti, and Senator Darlington Nwokocha (Secretary, LP Caretaker Committee) and deliberated on the judgment.
The former finance minister itted that the judgement which upheld the Nnewi Convention of the party preceded the formation of the Caretaker Committee, said the leaders resolved to challenge in the judgement.
The LP caretaker committee chairman called on all party to remain calm and maintain peace as they continue reconciliation efforts.
“This evening, I met with His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi, His Excellency Governor Alex Otti, and Senator Darlington Nwokocha (Secretary, LP Caretaker Committee). We deliberated on the judgment ed today.
“The case actually preceded the formation of the Caretaker Committee. However, after being briefed, the Caretaker Committee decided to the case. Consequently, we have resolved to appeal the judgment accordingly.
Hon. Peter Azubuike, a Labour Party chieftain in Abia state, is confident that the November 2nd local government election will proceed as planned, despite a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja declaring Julius Abure the authentic national chairman of the party, ABN TV reports.
The court held that the Labour Party convention held in Awka in March, which produced Abure as the party's national chairman, was valid.
The court also ordered INEC to recognize Abure as the national chairman of the party.
This therefore invalidates a convention recently held in Umuahia Abia state in which a former Minister, Nenadi Usman was appointed the caretaker committee chairman of LP.
It therefore means that every action taken by the committee is now invalidated.
The committee had cleared candidates to contest for the next month's local government election in Abia.
However, Hon. Azubuike, a former Labour Party House of Assembly candidate believes that the ruling is nothing to worry about.
He said the tenure of Abure as the national chairman has expired, which he said necessitated the setting up of the caretaker committee.
According to him, a political party is not built around one person and legality cannot be extracted from illegality, to the extent that Abure cannot continue to lead the party after his tenure has come to an end.
He also faulted what he called a premature convention in Awka which produced Abure again for a fresh term in office, saying such is an illegality that cannot stand.
Crisis has hit the governing Labour Party in Abia State ahead of November local government election in the state, as parallel primary elections have been held between factions.
Speaking with ABN TV in Umuahia on Monday, a former chairman of the party in the state and chairman of the LG electoral committee, Ceekay Igara claimed that his committee has conducted a primary election, waiting for approval of the National Executive Committee to approve submission to the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC).
Meanwhile, another list of those who emerged victorious from another primary election believed to have the governor's backing is circulating online.
But Igara insists that his committee allegedly set up by the party's national leadership is the one charged with the responsibility of holding the primary LG election.
According to him, the national leadership of LP made available nomination forms his committee sold to aspirants, wondering how another faction could claim to have held a primary election without nomination forms.
He insists that all nomination forms for the recent primary elections were provided by the LP national leadership, insisting that his committee has the backing of the LP national headquarters

"Those who are truly called by God fear God, because it is a fearful thing to fall into the hand of God. Anybody that wants the right thing to be done should preach righteousness", he stated.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3fIDoE4cJU

It will also be recalled that the Nigeria's House of Representatives Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu who led the Nigerian delegation to the Conference at various sessions repeatedly called the attention of the Conference to the tragedy in Nigeria.
The Conference in their statement called on the respective African governments and the international community to provide immediate assistance to people of the affected areas.
The Speakers also said their solidarity must translate into concrete actions that prioritize human dignity and resilience in the face of adversity.
The statement reads thus: "We, the Speakers of the African Parliaments, convened at this important conference, express our profound solidarity with the people of Nigeria and all victims of flooding across the African continent. Recent catastrophic floods have caused widespread devastation, resulting in loss of lives, displacement of communities, and significant destruction of infrastructure. It is our collective responsibility to stand with those affected and address the underlying challenges that exacerbate these crises.
"The floods in Nigeria and other regions have highlighted the urgent need for a comprehensive response to natural disasters, driven by climate change and inadequate infrastructure. As representatives of our nations, we acknowledge the impact of these events on food security, health, and overall socio-economic stability. We recognize that the consequences of such disasters extend beyond immediate relief, affecting generations to come.
"In light of these challenges, we call upon our governments and the international community to take decisive actions, including: Immediate Humanitarian Assistance: We urge all stakeholders to prioritize the provision of immediate humanitarian aid to flood victims. This includes food, medical supplies, shelter, and psychological for those affected by these disasters.
"Strengthening Disaster Preparedness: We must invest in disaster risk reduction and management strategies. This involves enhancing our infrastructure, improving early warning systems, and developing comprehensive response plans to mitigate the impact of future disasters.
"Promoting Climate Resilience: We must work together to address the root causes of climate change. This includes promoting sustainable land management practices, investing in renewable energy, and ensuring that our development strategies are environmentally sound and resilient to climate impacts.
"Facilitating Regional Cooperation: We call for increased collaboration among African nations to share best practices, resources, and knowledge in managing flood risks and responding to humanitarian crises. Solidarity and unity are essential in facing these challenges collectively.
"Advocating for Long-term Solutions: We must engage in policy dialogue to tackle the systemic issues that lead to vulnerability among communities. This includes addressing poverty, inequality, and lack of access to essential services, which hinder our ability to respond effectively to disasters.
Some of the proposed measures include the establishment of centres of excellence at the subregional levels to build capacity in technology; the need for innovative financial models; and the creation of appropriate incentives for public, private partnership (PPP) arrangement for the development of infrastructures under the flagship.
The country's propositions were advanced by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and leader of the Nigerian delegation, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu on Thursday to the ongoing 12th Annual Conference of Speakers of National and Regional Parliaments at the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) in Midrand, South Africa, Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker, Levinus Nwabughiogu said in a statement.
Agenda 2063 is a 50 year Africa’s blueprint and master plan for transforming the continent into the global powerhouse of the future.
Signed in 2013, the agenda is the continent’s strategic framework that aims to deliver on its goal for inclusive and sustainable development.
It encapsulates not only Africa’s aspirations for the future but also identifies key flagship programmes which can boost Africa’s economic growth and development and lead to the rapid transformation of the continent.
Speaking at the session, Kalu who reacted to a paper presented on the subject-matter urged the Parliament to strive to make agenda 2063 a house hold name in Africa, the statement quoted him further as saying.
The Deputy Speaker also underscored the need to fund the project to achieve the desired results adequately.
"I want to commend you for that beautiful presentation. The idea is wonderful, we are pursuing it but we are struggling. We are struggling because of the gaps you have mentioned.
"The issue of financing. You also agreed that financing is an issue with regards to this agenda. So, the question becomes, how do we make it a household project. A household agenda without fund? It will be difficult, and you’ve highlighted that the we cannot depend on external bodies to be able to push this project, we need to own it, finance it.
"Will it be a good idea for Africa to look at PPP, Private Public Partnership in raising funds for the fulfillment of the objectives of this agenda. As legislators in our various parliaments, legislating that those who participate especially in infrastructure development that’s in line with this agenda 2063, to incentivize maybe through a tax break for some of them.
"Another one is that it appears to me that there’s a strong overlap between agenda 2063 and SDGs. I heard you talk about health facilities and rest of them, which is also one of the agenda of SDGs. Are they not overlapping so much if they are and SDGs is taking care of some of these responsibilities, do we not to prioritize the ones that are outside the list of SDGs to be able to drive efficiency in a better form. With regards to implementation and oversight, how it is being done in various countries especially in my country where I come from, Nigeria is that SDGs implementation is being executed by the ministry in charge of that and also, the parliament oversights it.
"For us to drive 2063, there’s every reason for people to have the right capacity to drive it. We cannot go to Europe and borrow from people that will help us implement our agenda. To achieve that, what are we doing about the knowledge that’s lacking, the capacity that’s lacking?
"Will it be a wrong proposal for us to say, let’s us establish centers known as centres of excellence across the various regions in Africa where we can build capacities in technology and knowledge so that we’ll be able to own this project", Kalu proposed.

The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), the apex sociopolitical youth group in the South East, has condemned the ongoing feud between the media teams of former Governor Orji Uzor Kalu and Governor Alex Otti over the Ohafia-Arochukwu Road.
The group described it as regrettable, stating it is not beneficial for Abia or Ndigbo.
In a statement issued in Owerri, tly endorsed by COSEYL President General Comrade Good Luck Ibem and Publicity Secretary Okey Nwaoru, they said that both camps’ releases indicate that regional issues are more pressing.
They criticized Governor Otti’s release from August 28, 2024, during the road reconstruction flag-off, which mentioned Premier Michael Ọkpara without acknowledging other contributors.
According to them, that statement is exclusionary and suggests the Governor is only concerned with self-gratification.
The statement reads, "It should be recalled, was the premier before the Nigerian civil war. So it is exclusionary to state, as contained in Governor Otti’s statement, that the road was built by Michael Ọkpara without mentioning others, including during military rule, who contributed to building the road, even though they did not complete the project begun under them.
“Before Senator Orji Uzor Kalu became governor of Abia State, Professor Chimere Ikeokwu, a board member of the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF), and Mazi Ọchị Achinivu, a Senior Director, who are prominent Aro sons, used their good offices to attract the funds for the construction of the project.”
“Construction began under Gen. Sani Abacha but was later abandoned after the head of state then died in 1998.”
"As an elected governor, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu resurfaced the road in 2002/2003 and later facilitated the rehabilitation of the road as a senator in 2017/2018 when he attracted the federal government to the road.”
“Senator Orji Uzor Kalu did not relent; he kept pressuring the Buhari-led federal government to intervene in the road. So saying or trying to exclude Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and others like Dr. Ikeokwu and Mazi Achinuvu from the success story of the Ohafia-Arochukwu Road is a disservice to our history.”
