How many more lives must be lost before President Tinubu takes decisive action to address the deteriorating security situation in Benue State?
What is preventing the President from declaring a state of emergency in Benue, given the persistent attacks and widespread unrest, killings and instability in the state?
It is deeply concerning that a state of emergency was swiftly declared in Rivers State despite its relatively peaceful status while Benue continues to suffer frequent attacks by armedmen, non state actors overrunning towns and villages. These assaults have resulted in significant loss of life, destruction of property, and the displacement of thousands of residents.
Most recently, the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA) announced the registration of an additional 18,592 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), highlighting the scale of the crisis. This is no longer a localized conflict, it is a humanitarian emergency, A tragedy
This governor’s statement underscores the fact that the state government is overwhelmed. A prompt and decisive federal intervention through the declaration of a state of emergency, may now be the only viable step to restore peace and safeguard the lives and property of Benue's citizens.

A faction of the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has called on the National Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against President Bola Tinubu over an alleged conflict of interest in the award of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway contract.
The leader of the group, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, in an interview with newsmen, condemned Tinubu’s recent public declaration that the contractor handling the project, Gilbert Chagoury, was his partner during the inauguration of the 30-kilometre Phase 1, Section 1 of the coastal highway project.
President Tinubu, while inaugurating the project last Saturday, praised the Chagoury-led Hitech Construction Company for its work on the road, which he described as a “symbol of courage and commitment.”
“To the contractors and my partner in daring, it was tough for us… We came together to tame the Atlantic,” Tinubu said.
The highway is being executed by Hitech Construction, a subsidiary of the Chagoury Group, which also spearheads the Eko Atlantic City project, an ambitious real estate development built on reclaimed land from the Atlantic Ocean.
Commenting on Tinubu’s statement, Oba Olaitan expressed disappointment at what he described as a blatant ission of conflict of interest, stating that the road was awarded without competitive bidding and appeared tailored to benefit the privately owned Eko Atlantic City.
“All President Tinubu is doing is building a road to his own Atlantic City. He openly said the contractor is his partner. That means he awarded a federal contract to himself.
“That road was not d for public bidding. It is a national shame. If we had a truly independent and vibrant National Assembly, they would have begun impeachment proceedings immediately.”
He also questioned the rationale behind commissioning just a small portion of the highway, suggesting the government may have no further intention of pursuing the full stretch once the part leading to Atlantic City is done.

“Why commission just four per cent of the road? That road leads straight to their private development. If that part is done, they may abandon the rest. This is a clear conflict of interest,” the Afenifere leader insisted.
Calling on lawmakers to take action, Olaitan said, “The National Assembly must prove that it is not complicit. If they are truly independent, they must act now. We cannot condone this. This is not how to run a democracy. The president has itted to a breach of public trust.
“I am calling on the National Assembly to start the impeachment process now if they are a truly independent and vibrant National Assembly and if they are not equally complicit. We can’t condone such a thing.”
Reacting, the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress said the call for Tinubu’s impeachment lacked substance and was “a joke taken too far.”
Speaking in an interview on Friday, Lagos APC spokesperson Seye Oladejo described the allegation as a deliberate misinterpretation of the President’s comments.
“I will just regard that as a joke taken too far. Maybe they need to consult their dictionary to understand what ‘partner’ means. Did he say business partner? He didn’t say they have any relationship or any incorporated firm where they both have shares. He called them ‘partners in daring’; people who believed in his vision and ed in pursuing it,” he said.
Oladejo added there was no basis for linking the remarks to a business arrangement, saying due process was followed in awarding the contract.
“Relevant authorities handled the contract process. If there’s any issue, it should be addressed through the appropriate channels, not through calls for impeachment,” he added. https://businessday.ng/news/article/afenifere-urges-national-assembly-to-impeach-tinubu-over-highway-contract-conflict/

Lere Olayinka is a deeply unstable individual who formerly served Ayo Fayose, until he played a role in rendering him politically irrelevant. He has since redirected his loquacious mouth service to Nyesom Wike, a widely known and notorious drunkard, infamous for his habitual consumption of forty-year-old whiskey. Wike, in turn, is associated with a well-known narcotics trafficker, a forger of official documents, and an opportunistic power monger actively engaged in criminal state capture. That, in essence, is the complete picture.
Lere Olayinka should not be regarded as a credible figure and shouldn't be taken seriously

The much-touted restructuring promised by Tinubu and his ers prior to the 2023 election has largely proven to be mere campaign rhetoric.
Despite early indications such as mere expressions of for state police and the recent Supreme Court judgment on local government financial autonomy, implementation has remained elusive. No significant constitutional amendments have been enacted.
The truth is that there has been minimal genuine effort toward meaningful restructuring, reinforcing the perception that the promise was politically expedient rather than sincerely intended.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has said that two years into President Bola Tinubu’s istration, Nigerian workers and the masses have experienced no gains—only pain and misery.
In an appraisal of the istration’s first two years, NLC President, Joe Ajaero stated that there has been nothing to celebrate since the government came into power.
According to him: “When President Bola Tinubu took office on May 29, 2023, he promised a new dawn—bold economic reforms that would rescue Nigeria from fiscal instability and set it on a path to prosperity.
But two years later, the only thing bolder than his rhetoric is the magnitude of suffering and hardship his policies have inflicted on workers and ordinary Nigerians. Far from renewing hope, his istration has recycled the same failed neoliberal experiments of the past, proving once again that you cannot cure a patient by prescribing the poison that made them sick in the first place.”
Citizens’ woes “The sudden removal of the petrol subsidy sent shockwaves through an already fragile economy, causing fuel prices to skyrocket from N187 to over N600 per litre overnight. The government claimed it was a necessary sacrifice to free up funds for development—but where are the results?
“Instead of reinvestment, Nigerians got inflation so vicious that families now skip meals, businesses shut down daily, and transport costs consume what little remains of workers’ wages. The naira, left to the so-called ‘market forces,’ has collapsed in value, turning Nigeria into a bargain basement for neighbouring countries, while local industries suffocate under the weight of imported inflation.
“What makes this pain even more frustrating is that none of it is new. We’ve seen this script before—subsidy removals, devaluations, and IMF-approved austerity—each time sold as the bitter pill Nigeria must swallow for a brighter future. But when has it ever worked? These same policies under past istrations only widened inequality, enriched a few, and left the majority poorer. Tinubu’s version is no different—except the suffering is deeper, the anger louder, and the government’s response more brutal.
“Nigerian workers have seen their real wages obliterated. Pensioners, SMEs (facing over 150 per cent inflation in inputs), and 150 million Nigerians are now multi-dimensionally poor. It has been two years of intimidation and harassment for Labour leaders and trade unions in Nigeria. Flagrant disregard for court orders and the criminalisation of union protests and actions have become the norm. Wage award arrears at the federal level remain unpaid, despite repeated promises.
“The only notable effort is the provision of compressed natural gas (CNG) buses by the Federal Government to ease transportation for Nigerian workers—but this remains grossly inadequate, hampered by severe gas infrastructure deficits.”
No dialogue
“Promised dialogue with Labour unions has been replaced with intimidation and violence. Workers demanding a living wage are met with batons and threats, while the government wallows in luxury. The same officials who preach sacrifice travel in convoys, feast on bloated budgets, and treat public funds like personal piggy banks. Meanwhile, factories close, jobs vanish, and hunger becomes the defining feature of Tinubu’s Nigeria.
“Who benefits from this folly? Not the millions of Nigerians who can no longer afford food or transport.
Not the small businesses buried under the weight of rising costs. The real winners are the usual suspects—the oil cartels, the currency speculators, the political elite with offshore s, and their foreign backers at the IMF and World Bank, who have always seen Nigeria as a laboratory for their disastrous economic theories.”
Economy “Economic performance can only be measured by how well the citizens feel. No amount of data manipulation can explain away the massive hardship that pervades our nation. Workers and ordinary Nigerians are deeply worried about the future.
“In any case, in the surreal landscape of a nation grappling with escalating insecurity, discussing the intricacies of economic policy seems akin to debating the colour of curtains in a burning house. The pervasive threat of mass kidnappings, abductions, and banditry casts an ominous shadow over society, rendering economic discourse almost absurd in the face of urgent, life-threatening crises.
“While economic stability is undoubtedly a crucial aspect of governance, the reality of citizens living in constant fear—with lives upended by the heinous acts of criminals—demands immediate attention and action. Who will invest in such an environment except looters and plunderers?”
Insecurity
“Boko Haram and other insurgent groups have multiplied in recent years, while lives and properties are lost daily across the nation. Our nation is at war. In such a climate, the absurdity lies in the stark disconnect between bureaucratic discussions on fiscal policy and the visceral, pressing needs of a populace caught in the crossfire of insecurity.
“Citizens find themselves torn between the hypothetical benefits of economic strategies and the immediate threats to their safety and well-being. The urgency of addressing the security crisis is a stark reminder that, in the hierarchy of priorities, protecting life and liberty must take precedence over economic debate—challenging the very essence of governance in times of profound adversity.
“The truth is simple: reforms that bring only pain without gain are not reforms at all. They are deformations—deliberate assaults on the poor in service of a system that rewards the powerful. If this government truly wants to renew hope, it must abandon these cruel experiments, listen to the people, and chart a new course—one that puts Nigerians, not foreign creditors and profiteers, at the centre of policy. Anything less is a betrayal of public trust.”
Workers’ rights collapse globally, ITUC raises alarm
Workers’ rights are in free fall across every continent, according to the 2025 ITUC Global Rights Index, with Europe and the Americas recording their worst scores since the Index began in 2014.
Just seven countries now have the top rating of 1 for their respect for workers’ rights, compared with 51 — or one in three — rated 5 and 5+.
If the current trend continues, no country will hold a rating of 1 within the next 10 years.
Key findings include: Three out of five global regions saw conditions worsen; the Americas (3.68) and Europe (2.78) recorded their worst scores on record. Europe continued a rapid deterioration from 1.84 in 2014 — the biggest decline seen in any region worldwide over the past 10 years, only seven out of the 151 countries surveyed (fewer than 5%) earned a top-tier rating of 1 — down from 18 a decade ago. The 10 worst countries for workers are: Bangladesh, Belarus, Ecuador, Egypt, Eswatini, Myanmar, Nigeria (NEW), the Philippines, Tunisia, and Türkiye. The worst region in the world for working people is the Middle East and North Africa, with an average rating of 6.8. Deaths of trade unionists were recorded in Cameroon, Colombia, Guatemala, Peru, and South Africa, 87% of countries violated the right to strike; 80% violated the right to collective bargaining, and Workers’ access to justice was restricted in 72% of countries — the worst level ever recorded.
ITUC General-Secretary, Luc Triangle said: “The 2025 ITUC Global Rights Index exposes the outcomes of the betrayal of the system built after World War II, founded on democracy, trade union rights, and justice.
Governments have collaborated in decades of deregulation, neo-liberalism, and neglect, leading to the collapse of workers’ rights. This has disenfranchised millions and paved the way for extremism, authoritarianism, and the billionaire coup against democracy that now threatens democracy itself.
“If this pace of decline continues, in 10 years, there will be no country left in the world with the highest rating for its respect for workers’ rights. This is a global scandal, but it is not unavoidable; it is a deliberate decision that can be reversed.
“That is why the ITUC is exposing the coordinated attack by the ultra-rich and their political allies to rig economies against working people. It is not inevitable that workers’ rights will worsen in the 2026 Rights Index.
“Together, through strong, independent unions and a democracy that delivers for all, we can reclaim power, rebuild economies that serve people — not corporations — and demand international institutions that are able to those they were created to protect. Our movement is fighting every day for this future — and next year’s Index must show the beginning of real change.”
Other key findings: In 12 countries, conditions have deteriorated so severely — due to conflict and the corresponding collapse of the rule of law — that they now hold the lowest-possible rating of 5+. These countries are Afghanistan, Burundi, Central African Republic, Haiti, Libya, Myanmar, Palestine, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. Only three countries saw their ratings improve in 2025: Australia (2), Mexico (3), and Oman (3). Seven countries received worse ratings: Argentina (4), Costa Rica (4), Georgia (4), Italy (2), Mauritania (5), Niger (4), and Panama (4). 75% of countries excluded workers from the right to establish or a trade union, 74% of countries impeded the registration of unions, 45% of countries restricted free speech and assembly. Workers were arrested and detained in 71 countries, and workers experienced violence in 40 countries.
The 2025 ITUC Global Rights Index is being released on 2 June to coincide with the start of the International Labour Conference (ILC) at the International Labour Organization in Geneva, Switzerland — the world’s parliament for work.
ITUC priorities at the ILC include: Tackling rights violations through the Committee on the Application of Standards and the implementation of Article 33 measures concerning Myanmar, Advancing protections in the platform economy, addressing biological hazards at work, and promoting innovative pathways to formalise informal work by
The violations exposed in the 2025 Index will contribute to this work.
The ILC will include a special session on the 2025 ITUC Global Rights Index at 13:30 CEST on 10 June. The session will feature testimonies from trade union representatives from some of the worst countries in the world for working people, as well as remarks from Luc Triangle, ITUC General-Secretary, and Paapa Danquah, ITUC Legal Director.
The ITUC Global Rights Index is a comprehensive review of workers’ rights in law, ranking 151 countries against a list of 97 indicators derived from ILO Conventions and jurisprudence. As such, it is the only database of its kind. Violations are recorded each year from April to March

•Slams INEC chair, Yakubu, compares him to Maurice Iwu
•Says current government doesn’t respect the law
•Urges Tinubu to for savings from subsidy removal
Ex-Governor of Rivers state, RotimiAmaechi, yesterday took a swipe at the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), NyesomWike, implying that they are not on the same level and that he won’t exchange words with ‘children’.
Despite holding back consistently from talking politics or mentioning Wike, under pressure during an interview on Arise Television, Amaechi stated that as someone who hired Wike as chief of staff, he could not trade insults with him in public.
Earlier, launching a scathing attack on his long-time rival and predecessor, Wike had dismissed Amaechi’s widely circulated remark, “We’re all hungry”, made during his 60th birthday celebration last week, claiming the former Rivers governor is not hungry for food, but for political relevance.
But Amaechi also disputed Wike’s imputation that he was instrumental to him (Amaechi) becoming governor, stressing that God, former Governor Peter Odili, the judiciary and the Rivers state people were responsible for his election.
He urged journalists to press Wike on how he contributed to him becoming governor, even though he refused to mention the FCT minister’s name throughout the conversation. “I was once his boss. Whether he likes it or not. I hired him. I could have said no,” he added.
Amaechi also stated that he made Wike his chief of staff so as to be able to supervise him closely, despite pressure to make him a commissioner of finance, noting that it’s Wike that never acknowledged that anyone ever helped him.
“I wanted him as chief of staff so I could supervise him. I didn’t offer him commissioner for finance. You see, I’m saying this because I don’t want to issues with children. You know, he made himself chief of staff. He made himself governor. He made himself minister. He made himself local government chairman’, he said mockingly.
While pointing to the lack of ‘maturity’ in Wike’s conversations, he noted that politicians no longer care about their family names, reason they behave without thinking about the implications.
He argued that he (Amaechi) built several flyovers as governor without making any noise, expressing surprise about the media attention on the flyovers built by Wike in Rivers.
The former minister also expressed disgust over the abandonment and destruction of the projects he completed, stressing that it distresses him each time he sees the projects he built being vandalised.
Amaechi also threw jabs at the current Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), MahmoodYakubu, comparing him to the discredited one-time INEC head, Prof. Maurice Iwu.
“The current chairman of INEC, if he was the chairman of INEC in 2015, we would not have won. That’s an important point. May God bless (Attahiru) Jega. It’s a very interesting point. Because the ground rules were clear. The current chairman of INEC can only be compared to Iwu.
“When we were to APC, Jega opened the door and we complied with the registration requirements. He got APC ed. The current man, if you comply with all these, he would not you. Already INEC is biased.
“So, the only thing I can tell you now is that looking at the way Nigeria has run the election, even the option A4 led us forward. At least a lot of transparency. You were sure of what was going on. Then we came back to meet people like Iwu and others and the current one and things got worse.
“So, you don’t know whether to say we are progressing or we are regressing…There’s a state capture using the electoral institution as a machine,” he added.
Describing Jega as a man of conscience, he argued that the current INEC chairman has already said that he’s not ing new parties.
“Already he (Yakubu) is stopping parties from being ed. Already, INEC has taken sides. INEC is no longer the umpire,” he added.
Amaechi also accused the Bola Tinubu istration of not obeying the rule of law, and that the judiciary was losing its respect.
“One funny thing about the current government is that they don’t even obey laws. They don’t obey the constitution. They’re not allowing the opposition to political parties. I was 34 when I became Speaker. The process was a bit more transparent than you have now,” he emphasised.
Amaechi also reiterated his opposition to the suspension of the elected Governor of Rivers state, SiminalayiFubara, arguing that the constitution does not give the president the power to suspend any governor.
Besides, the former Rivers governor called for ability in the spending of the savings from fuel and electricity subsidies.
“The president removed the subsidy. Where is the money? The president removed the subsidy on electricity. It got to a point where oil subsidies got to N8 trillion. If we deploy N8 trillion into this economy now, it will feel the impact.
“Let me also tell you, do we need the coastal road in the manner that it was awarded? Yes, the south-south needs the road. But fix the east-west road. I don’t know how many trillions. If we deploy that money to the economy, it will change our lives. Who is collecting that money? The president needs to tell us,” he maintained.

.....under TinubuSince the APC assumed power at the centre, Nigerians have experienced a significant spike in fuel prices.
After a decade in control of Nigeria’s central government, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has blamed the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for increasing poverty under President Bola Tinubu’s istration.
The APC, in a statement by its spokesperson, Felix Morka, on Monday, blamed the opposition party for the widespread poverty in the country.
“ It was the failure of previous istrations, particularly 16 years of PDP istration, to allow the naira to find its real value that created the economic conditions of poverty that the present istration is now addressing,” the statement reads in part.
The ruling party lauded Mr Tinubu for removing fuel subsidy and harmonising exchange rates. This came in response to criticisms from opposition figures Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, Nasir El-Rufai of the Social Democratic Party, and Rotimi Amaechi—the trio reportedly plotting a coalition to oust Mr Tinubu from office in 2027.
Promising reforms focused on anti-corruption, tackling insecurity, and alleviating poverty, the APC ousted the PDP in the historic 2015 election.
Though the APC wrested power from Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP a decade ago, it has continually blamed widespread poverty and insecurity on the PDP’s legacy.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari, who succeeded Mr Jonathan, served two (eight years) before handing over to his fellow party member, Bola Tinubu, on May 29, 2023—two years ago.
In the past 10 years under APC istrations, Nigerians have witnessed increased banditry, gunmen raids on communities, mass kidnappings of schoolchildren for ransom, widespread poverty, and unprecedented inflation.
Since the APC assumed power at the centre, Nigerians have experienced a significant spike in fuel prices—from N87 to over N1,000 and later to about N900—while the naira has collapsed from about N400 to the dollar to over N1,600 to the dollar.
Similarly, food prices, the cost of transportation, and the overall cost of living have risen astronomically in the past ten years under successive APC regimes.
With inflation at 24 per cent—a drop from 34 per cent after the economy was rebased—Nigeria recorded the largest increase in acute food insecurity globally in 2024, according to the 2025 Global Report on Food Crises, published by the Global Network Against Food Crises in collaboration with the Food Security Information Network and UNICEF.
Last month, the International Monetary Fund reported that poverty and food insecurity remained high under Mr Tinubu.
The World Bank’s Africa Pulse report of April 2025 also stated that Nigeria has the highest number of extremely poor people globally, warning that more Nigerians will be plunged into poverty by 2027. https://gazettengr.com/after-ten-years-in-power-apc-blames-pdp-rule-for-unprecedented-poverty-under-tinubu/

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared that the 2027 general elections will serve as a referendum on President Bola Tinubu’s istration.
His media adviser, Mazi Paul Ibe, made this assertion in a chat with Vanguard in Abuja on Monday night while responding to recent allegations by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The APC had accused Atiku of seeking to reposition the opposition for selfish gains, claiming he aimed to regain access to state resources.
Ibe dismissed these allegations, stating that Atiku’s efforts were driven by Nigerians’ aspirations for a better life.
“It’s clear that these people were never prepared for governance. All they’re interested in is politics.
“They’ve gone to extreme lengths to ensure the demise of progress. Every action they’ve taken contradicts the very essence of democracy,” he said.
Ibe criticised the Tinubu istration’s inefficiency, citing the completion of only 30 kilometres of a 700-kilometre road in two years as an example.
“They rolled out all the drums and celebrated completing a mere 4% of the project. Isn’t that absurd? Such irresponsibility! The money spent on that celebration could have been used to build several more kilometres of that road,” he exclaimed.
Highlighting Nigeria’s worsening socio-economic conditions, Ibe noted that the country has become the poverty capital of the world and now leads Africa in child malnutrition.
“People are hungry. For the first time, even those who can afford to buy a ram for Eid can be counted on one hand. Someone told me people are pooling money together just to buy a ram and partake in the celebration,” he lamented.
Ibe emphasised that Atiku’s actions were driven by Nigerians’ desire for a better life, not personal gain.
“His Excellency’s efforts are driven by Nigerians’ yearnings for a better life, not because he wants to regain access to state resources. Absolutely not,” he said.
He also defended Atiku’s integrity, contrasting his business achievements with the records of his critics.
“Where were these critics when His Excellency was already well-established long before democracy began in 1999? Atiku has run multi-million-dollar businesses, employed people, and invested his own resources into his campaigns. He’s not looking to exploit state funds like they are,” Ibe stated.
He urges the APC to focus on governance rather than obsessing over Atiku’s activities.
“It’s time they used the remainder of their term to focus on improving Nigerians’ lives instead of obsessing over what Atiku Abubakar is or isn’t doing,” he said.
