We Requested for More’: What Terrorists With Missile System Said on Camera

On Saturday, a one-minute video posted on social media platforms showed a group of terrorists assessing a Man-Portable Air Defence System (MANPADS).

A MANPADS is a lightweight missile launcher designed to shoot down aircraft, especially low-flying ones.

In the video posted by Defence Times, a page that provides security information on X, the men were filmed around a forest area. They had a conversation about the MANPADS, its capabilities and their ability to use it.

The caption of the video suggested that the men are in an area in Zamfara State, where a fighter jet was shot down by terrorists in July 2021.

The men also claimed that they had downed three different Nigerian fighter aircraft.

Their conversations in Hausa revealed that the weapon contained ammunition, and they took pride in being able to use it against the authorities.

One of the men, who was identified as Ibrahim, shortened to ‘Ibro’, expressed his proficiency in handling the weapon.

“Ibro, you can use this weapon, can’t you?”one of the men asked.

“I can, by His Grace,” the one carrying the weapon responded.

“And you can shoot down a plane with this, can’t you?” he asked again.

“Of course I can. We are masters at shooting down planes,” Ibro affirmed.

“Whew! This is a very big gun, isn’t it?”

“In Nigeria, we’ve brought down three planes with it.”

“So, Ibro, that means if you sight a plane, that’s the end of it, right?”

“You mean now?” Ibro asked.

“Yes. Is that how you shot down that plane?”

“The other plane, right? Yes, we brought it down with this.”

“Wow! Ibro, you really do have a deadly weapon, don’t you? And I can see it has plenty of bullets.”

“There are about 50,” Ibro said.

“And what are you going to do for Dauda?”

“We have requested for more.”

WHAT KIND OF WEAPON IS IT?

Using InVid and Google Image Reverse, FIJ analysed the key features of this weapon and found that it has similarities with other weapons like this and this.

They are similar to the SPG-9 recoilless rifle made by the Soviet Union or more closely like the SPG-82, B-10 and Type 65 MANPADS.

These weapons have long, pipe-like barrels and are designed to fire powerful explosive rounds. They usually have a tube opening in the front where the projectile comes out, and a sling or handle so the weapon can be carried over the shoulder. Some also have a small trigger or grip area. The one seen in this image is very similar to a group of weapons known as recoilless rifles.

These types of weapons were once common in Cold War-era conflicts.

HOW DID THEY GET IT?

According to a report by the United Nations on Libya’s arms proliferation, Nigeria is one of the countries serving as a destination hotspot for these kinds of weapons.

“In of end s, while various types of individuals and armed entities are benefitting from the dissemination of Libyan arsenals, the majority of areas in question are prone to terrorism and the materiel is likely to enhance the capacity of terrorist groups in areas such as Egypt, Mali, Nigeria, the Syrian Arab Republic, Tunisia and the Gaza Strip,” the report reads in part.

In February, Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), told the Senate Public s Committee that the police could not for 178,459 missing firearms from the inventory of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

This is another opportunity for terrorists and criminals to get access to weapons such as this missile system.

While it might be difficult to determine the exact cost of the weapon in the footage because most of the weapons are traded through a black market, Havocscope, a website that provides information and threat intelligence on the global black market, said that Arms Trafficking across the world costs about $1 billion annually.

It states that the recoilless rifles like the SPG-9 can fetch between $400 and $2,600, depending on the region and condition.

The Nigerian Army has yet to comment on the circulating video of the suspected terrorists handling the MANPADS.

Bandits in Zamfara displaying what appears to be a MANPAD claiming that they downed 3 Nigerian Aircrafts with the weapon...

With July 2021 incident in Zamfara its not clear if their claim is correct but then is it possible that they still have this capability since 2021?

Our Tucanos and other sophisticated weapons were allowed to rust under Buhari when these terrorists were not so strong all because of "blood is thicker than water" . Instead of calling them terrorists, he called them bandits just to avoid using the weapons on them. Now they are almost as sophisticated as our military and has become more difficult to uproot. Nigeria must partner with countries like Israel to know how to deal with these terrorists.

Try and find examples of diverse countries that have stayed together.
It won't be an easy task because there aren't very many.

There are more examples of countries separating and disintegrating than uniting.

Sudan and South Sudan

Ethiopia and Eritrea

India and Pakistan

Czechia and Slovakia

The Soviet Union fracturing into 20 different countries

Yugoslavia fracturing into 4 countries:

Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Montenegro

The only conditions US gave him is not to use it in eastern Region thanks to Igbo ans Christian lobbyist in America...

So since so why are they not using it in the North... So it was their plan to use it in the east?

Or maybe they used tribalism and people promoted to pilot it don't have the idea

How many officially elected Igbo officials have called for Biafra

The funny thing is that this useless Igbo politicians don't know that they would gain more bargaining right in Nigeria if they push for Biafra

You do know that all NAF planes have stand off fire power that places them well outside the range of visual AA rockets like this one?

It may also interest you to know that the only reason people even see the NAF jets is that they are trying to limit civilian casualties through visual confirmations. Should they decide not to use visual confirmation this man holding the manpad will hear the sound of the NAF jet from the great beyond.

Then someone says Adefarasin was not supposed to brandish his stun gun in his SUV...

So Terrorists can own their own ground to air missiles and let the world know about it but a pastor should not have a stun gun because he is not human abi...

Now, I can tell you that these guys will be dealt with very soon because what they have started will affect the rich people who travel by air so the government will quickly move to stop them just like Jonathan did to stop the EBOLA virus that year..

The worst case scenario is when they get their hands on FPV drones and it's tactics

That will be a really bad news for NA
because no nation as of now has adapted to this new method of warfare.
Example in Ukraine

Plus this warfare fit their style of asymmetrical tactics and propaganda

Imagine watching a clear video of BH dropping and diving bombing FPV explosive drones on NA base and ground troops with those useless terrorists sound tracks sad

The United States, Canada, Australia and Brazil are not multi ethnic colonial outposts like Nigeria.

They are immigrant countries settled and developed by Europeans.

They're not like Nigeria which has over 400 different ethnic groups that were forced to live together as one country without the consent of the people.

China is dominated by one ethnic group, the Han Ethnic group which makes up 95% of the country's population. The other 6 ethnic groups share the remaining 5% of the population.

India has had a continuous existence either as a country or an empire for thousands of years. India is even mentioned in the Old testament of the Bible. They have a common language which they have spoken hundreds of years called Hindi and they have a common religion they practice which is older than Christianity which is called Hinduism.

So these countries don't meet the criteria for disintegration like Nigeria does.

J17, Alpha and Tucano have stand off weapon systems. You failed to mention the incomingM346.

I think you are mistaking age of aircraft for capability. Once the aircraft has the necessary hard points and the weapons/radar/guidance software it can carry OTH weaponry. The Alpha for instance carries the Maverick air to ground missile and at a range of 22km it has fire and forget capabilities. Let's not even mention the Tucano, J17 and M346.

I am surprised that you mentioned the J17 inspite that it carries the PL weapons series.

The j17 block one doesn't have beyond visual capabilities for that model you get it from Block 3

The Tucano does but the airforce have never been supplied the missiles needed for , heard alpha were given avionics upgrade but i don't know the specifics so I can't say

Our most modern aircraft is the A29 Tucano but it's a a ground attack aircraft suited visual air ground combat and .

The M346 are not here yet , I know they are multi roles trainer/combat and carry Grifo radar which means they can track target up to 100kms away and engage them at 20kms which is not bad ..I look forward to them getting into combat
