The scheme needs to be scrapped. It has outlived its purpose.

Umuna bende Abia state that year, ochendu boys hostel the camp was the best in the SE region. Nice initiative though but I think it should be reformed because it is fast losing essence of the program.

Most people saying it should be scrapped. I think it should be made voluntary rather than mandatory.

If made voluntary, us in the south will foolishly opt out while the north will calculatedly opt-in

I would not forget my memorable service year I was one of the best at Nnewi Anambra State.
But my suggestion to this scheme is to empower corp with the annual allowance instead of paying monthly

The toilets were a very big mess, i i'd have to walk far away from the camp and climb the fence to shiiit inside a nylon, a lifestyle i developed in camp.
There was a particular day i feigned sickness and the soldier just left me on my bed, there was another day my phone was nearly seized on parade ground.
The Endurance trek is a story for another day, I somehow enjoyed meeting people from different parts of the country sha.
I later served at GDJSS,Kofar marke in Sokoto town.

So Awgu camp is indeed the first NYSC camp.

The camp is small but nothing less NYSC is a personnel year I enjoyed my 3 weeks stay in that camp eh. The camp life there isn't regimented.

The one year I spent in the East made it obvious to me that one Nigeria is a scam.

I served in 2016, I stayed in hostel K. The hotel doesn't have wall sockets but we improvised sha

I can count the number of times I went to the parade ground maybe if I won pluge mango. I can't come and stress myself because NYSC want me to parade to impress some senior citizens

We had to buy water before we can have our evening bath.
Short put was the best means to use the toilet. .

I attended a military boarding school, my previous school has prepared me for NYSC so the camp was fun for me.

Most countries in Europe and Asia practice this style of NYSC. It was borne from the idea of previous world wars that men and women should be train for combat ready.

South Korea and Isreal practice this scheme where citizens are train in military style for a period of one or two years. Gowon copied the initiative

South Korea and Israel have full time millitary service for 2 years, not NYSC style service....and they have it largely because they are under constant threat (South korea is under threat from the North Korea, and Israel...it's obvious). Israel has it for all sexes, SK, for men alone.

Europe used to have universal drafts, but has long since ended that. Only Russia has a similar draft, again for full time army service. USA used to until the draft ended in 1976.

Gowon's original plan for NYSC was two years of full army service for males. After secondary school. Idea dropped for cost concerns.

Only Kenya and Gambia (off the top of my head) have something similar to NYSC , and they copied it from NIgeria.

Scrap it today, tomorrow there will be no doctors, nurses, teachers and other essential staff, especially in rural areas....and then you go know real shege.

How many NYSc camps have functioning toilets and bathrooms?
That should be the focus not the first or last

Yes, it was at Agwu in Enugu state and I had the privilege of having my NYSC Orientation Camp there in 1993. We saw all the armory and arsenal of Ojukwu. It supposed to be converted to a museum. It's a great place but the only challenge there was lack of water.

We had mountaineering and endurance trek and we came out at Mgbidi.

It was very interesting and I pray we uphold the unity and the friendship.

we are still saying the same. Gowon modified this scheme and name it here NYSC and mandate it to be under the military command till today. the major different is handling of fire arms that was erased. all military drilling was part of the scheme.
