This was before the advent of dem-all-crazy. When men were men. It's unfortunate that dull, sick and brainless civilians have pulled down the army to thier rubbish level, corrupting thier loyalty and gallantry. These days we have nonsensical illiterate civilians giving orders to the army in the name of democracy, now we have potbellied generals and undisciplined rank and file, all of them wearing the camo just to get access to steal money. Those days, real men wear the camo for the glory and respect.

Real soldiers facing a real war situation. I wonder why the same army has found it hard to dislodge boko haram and other terrorists. Tribalism has destroyed the army. Then Nigeria was more united and the army was a bastion of unity amongst Nigerians.
Today politicians have destroyed everything making the army look weak and vulnerable.

That was then...
Ordinary boko boys they can not dislodge. grin

Stop talking rubbish.

The Nigerian military is even MORE powerful today, with better training, and more and better weapons.

They can never be as effective fighting an internal terrorist group in Nigeria for the simple reason that their ‘success’ in that depends on the amount of damage they can cause within the country, making it a terrible dilemma, which prevents them from exercising their full strength and armoury on the terrorists/bandits etc.

Send them out to fight a foreign war where there are no such restraints, and you will see they’re a fearsome fighting force.

Everything boils down to political will to do the needful.

grin When I wanted to the Nigerian Navy, then i was on my 2nd year in the university. It was all about ion and dedication to save in the Nigerian Armed Forces. I was swimming superfluously and not driven by lack of job to be a soldier.

After taking the NDA exam in Port Harcourt at a naval base, my name didn't appear when the results were published. I said ok, let me continue with my education.

Today, I feel happy about not been enlisted in the Navy considering how the Nigerian Govt made mess of the Armed Forces.

A friend of mine in the Navy told me some Naval officer don't even know how to swim. I was shocked to the marrow cos that should be the first requirement to be an officer of the Nigerian Navy. This is mediocrity at best.

It's a shame seeing soldiers extort money from motorists and engage in fuel bunkering.
I can relate, when I applied to the army after school, my name did not come out on the published list. It was quite disappointing for me then. My colleague name came out because he had a godfather in the Air Force. Me no get anybody na except God. Now I am so happy my name did not come out. I have the opportunity to US army now with my degree, the whole army thing just tire me…my friend continue asking me when I will . Civilian life for US sweet.

Watched a documentary on the war, it was done mostly with hidden camera, mehn the kind atrocities wey our men commit really got me ashamed. I had to call my dad to come and in watching. So many young men executed in cold blood with their hands tied behind their back some of execution caught on live camera.
who were the young men

You don't know know what you are talking about.

Did America destroy the terrorists in Iraq? Has Israel destroyed Hamas? Did Russia not leave Afghanistan in disgrace?

Fighting hit and run terrorists is a far different cry to fighting people who want to hold territory.

The Nigerian armed forces is far more lethal today. You can't even compare the two eras.
Even the weapon they carry nowadays are different from the ones they use those days but that oga did not know that hadn't been it's not we we and brother brother stuff those bandits or boko haram issue will have become a history but it's the enemy within what can we do..abi what did u think make the Biafra war that was planned to be won in 48hrs turn to a 3yrs war

Nigerian soldiers drafted to Sierra Leon and Liberia during the wars in those countries fathered 150 thousand Liberian and Sierra leonian children.
Many of the women were practically living with them in their trenches.
Plenty were taught how to fill their magazines.
After firing, you relax in the trench and continue firing..

Oga if the military wants to work it will work, the military under APC is shit. When kidnappers held Abia state in hostage in 2010, all the different units of police failed in curbing them, the Military stepped in under Maj Gen Musa of 82 div Enugu, they swept the state clean from kidnappers and we hardly heard anything kidnapping till APC entered.

Yes oh. Civilians are living the best of life. A soldier always has his life on the line. I was totally naive about what life was about while schooling, Hence I wanted to abandon my university education and enroll in the Army.

Today, I look into past and tell myself that the NDA authority actually did me a favour by not being itted to become a soldier.

The Sierra Leone Civil War (1991–2002), or the Sierra Leonean Civil War, was a civil war in Sierra Leone that began on 23 March 1991 when the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), with from the special forces of Liberian dictator Charles Taylor's National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL), intervened in Sierra Leone in an attempt to overthrow the Joseph Momoh government. The resulting civil war lasted almost 11 years, and had up to 70,000 casualties;an estimated 2.5 million people were displaced during the conflict.

That's an impressive thread. The Ecomog operations in Liberia and Sierra Leone came at a huge cost to Nigeria in of men and resources. I that period from the very early 1990s to be a defining point in Nigerian history. A time when the Gulf War oil windfall was diverted into Ecomog operations and partly embezzled by the military dictatorship and their cronies who became stupendously rich multimillionaires overnight.

Teni's dad?
That's NOT Teni Apata's father. Teni's Ekiti State-born father and former veteran of the Nigerian Civil War, Brigadier-General Simeon Olaosebikan Apata wasn't in the army at the time ECOMOG was in full effects back in the early 1990s. Teni's father had retired in the late 1970s and was already a multimillionaire as of the 1980s with a chain of mansions and a group of schools called Apata Memorial High School founded in 1980 in the Ire Akari Estate area of Isolo, Lagos State. He died on January 8, 1995 from injuries sustained from his gun duel with robbers in his area. I that those of us who knew him when he ed on in Lagos were in shock that day.

Hope that helps.

Fa fa fa fawl, You lie.

Boko Haram and Fulani Herdsmen are in the bush, not in the cities.
Yet the Nigerian Military could not defeat them, with no restraints.
The army could not cause any collateral damage to the terrorist groups, what a terrible dilemma for our Military.
No one prevents them from exercising their full strength and armoury on the terrorists/bandits in the bush
