The death of the president general, Engr Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu of Ohanaeze Ndigbo has thrown the apex Igbo organization into a new type of leadership crisis that appears multi-prong-both from within the organisation and from outside the organisation through political pressures.

Information available to 247ureports.com obtained from multiple sources within the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo indicates that shortly after the announcement of the death of Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu many within the leadership ranks of the Ohaneze Ndigbo saw opportunity.
They were quick to begin jostling to fill the vacant
position on an Acting capacity to serve out the
remaining tenure of the dead president general. In
particular, the regional and/or zonal Vice Presidents were holding secret nocturnal meetings at hotels in Owerri negotiating among themselves over who will fill the supposed vacancy.

As expected, this development did not settle
Smoothly with stakeholders who got wind of the
secret nocturnal meetings.
The stakeholders were quick to nip the plot. An
order was issued to halt all efforts targeted at
lobbying for the vacancy.
It was made clear that the current Ohanaeze
Ndigbo Secretary General will take over the affairs
of the organisation until the tenure of Emmanuel
Iwuanyanwu expires in two months time.

At the conclusion of his tenure,it is expected the next president general will hail out of the Igbo speaking regions of Rivers State.
Already, information available to 247ureports.com indicate that political Heavyweights of the likes of Nyesom Wike have begun to influence the selection of the candidate. Since Nyesom Wike hails from an Igbo speaking region of Rivers State
.

Our source indicates that the Federal Minister of
the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is behind the
move by the zonal vice presidents to grab the
vacant seat.
The FCT Minister according to our source has
developed interest in the selection process of who heads the Igbo organization for obvious political reasons. To the extent,he has vowed to produce the next president general - so as to control and/or influence the political direction and leaning of the organisation against the general election of 2027.
Already, three persons have indicated interest in
contesting for the position of president general.
Interestly, the three persons are Nyesom Wike's
kinsmen.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo has condemned a viral video where an unidentified poison was calling on the Igbo to poison Youruba and Edo people.

The National Publicity Secretary of the apex-Igbo sociocultural organisation, Alex Ogbonnia, who made this known in a statement on Wednesday, said that Ohanaeze would have ignored the clip as coming from a deranged psychopath but reactions from concerned citizens has made its reaction necessary.

The statement reads: “Our telephones have been inundated by various eminent persons who have expressed fears on the possibility of some persons carrying out the threats. It therefore becomes imperative for Ohanaeze to respond, especially when the National Publicity Secretary of the Afenifere, Mr. Jare Ajayi forwarded the clip and requested for prompt action.

“In the first place, there is no sufficient evidence that the lady in question is an Ibo. She does not in any way portray the Igbo character of thoughtfulness, discretion, self-censure and equanimity. There is no Igbo man or woman that will contemplate throwing stone in a full market for the fear of who shall be the victim.

“In other words, the Igbo travel more than any ethnic group in Africa. They also create homes away from home wherever they are found. They mix up or integrate with the local community and contribute to developing every community they find themselves.

“Based on the foregoing, two major derivatives emerge: if one should poison food in Lagos or Ibadan or Benin, is there any guarantee that the first victim will not be Igbo? The lady must be a depressed drowning ethnic bigot, obsessed by the negative side of history and unflinching satanic in orchestration.

“The Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Ambassador Okey Emuchay, MFR frowned at the video tape on the social media. Emuchay vehemently condemned both the video content and the perpetrator as a mischief-maker. They are the merchant of woes who deploy despicable and incendiary rhetoric to create ethnic mistrusts and conflicts where none exists.

“Ohanaeze seizes this opportunity to enlighten the younger generations that the Igbo, Edo and Yoruba share a lot in common. We share in cultural affinity, cosmology, morphology, and hospitality. The age-long inter-marriages between the Igbo, Yoruba and Edo have produced well accomplished great grand-children.

“In spite of an infinitesimal de-enculturated deviant category amongst the three ethnics, the Aguiyi Ironsi-Fajuyi episode at Ibadan on July 29, 1966 exemplifies the inviolable fraternity, amity, and camaraderie that must always be elevated, extolled and venerated amongst the groups at all times.

“Finally, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide wholeheartedly assures the Afenifere, the entire Yoruba and Edo brothers that the threat from the depraved mind should be ignored as idiotic, meaningless and vacuous. We add that, throughout history, proposals by the maladjusted are always dead on arrival.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo called on security agencies in Nigeria to trace and prosecute those behind the video.

Nigerian human rights activist, Hajia Najaatu Muhammed has rejected democracy in Africa describing it as alien to African culture and reason for under development and corruption in the sahel.

Naja in a viral video seen by independent spoke in Nigeria republic during a hausa language summit organised in the country to promote hausa language and other matters concerning sahel nations.

According to her, the white forced democracy on black Africans to steal their natural resources and enslave them by forcing them to speak french or english and teach such languages in their school which has brought slavery and under development in African nations.

She explained that, all the foreign countries that have developed uses their languages to teach in their schools and most of whom are not practising democracy hence the reason they are developed ” therefore if the military can bring development and make life easy for their citizens then no need for democracy in African nations.

The human rights activist who chided Nigeria,s federal government accused the country of attempt to cause disunity between Niger republic and Nigeria particularly targeted northern Nigeria who are closely related to people of Niger republic saying most northerners have relatives in Niger republic and vice versa but they vehemently rose against it and succeeded ” we rather die as martyrs than allow Nigeria to separate the north with Niger republic she thundered amid cheers from the crowd”.

She commended Niger military leader, Abdur, rahmane Tchiani for uniting his country despite heavy criticism from foreign countries calling on him to return the country to democracy.

This Has To Stop!’ Okonjo-Iweala Asks Politicians To Stop Weaponising Insecurity
The former Nigerian finance minister delivered a keynote address entitled, ‘A Social Contract For Nigeria’s Future’.

The Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has urged politicians in Nigeria to stop weaponising insecurity against their opposition in office.

She spoke before a room filled with lawyers at the Eko Hotel & Suites in Lagos during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) on Sunday.

The former Nigerian finance minister delivered a keynote address entitled, ‘A Social Contract For Nigeria’s Future’.

“We cannot have socio-economic development without security. We certainly cannot have security without development,” the WTO chief said.

“We all know that security has been weaponised in our country for political purposes by political actors, leading partly to the situation we have now.

“We have politicians who believe that the best way to make their opponents look bad is to instigate insecurity making it look like they can’t govern, regardless of whether this leads to loss of lives and property of innocent Nigerians. This has to stop.”

Oil Theft Intolerable’
The WTO boss said there are enough technological innovations to track crude oil theft and bring those behind the act to justice in Nigeria. She said those responsible for stopping the “intolerable” action of crude oil theft no longer have excuses.

Okonjo-Iweala said, “A second aspect of security relates to the security of national assets. Nigerians have seen for years how organised crude oil theft on a massive scale seriously undermines the economic and financial health of the country.

“All Nigerians must agree that stealing of our national assets of any type is intolerable and must be stopped.”

She said oil theft has hampered the strengthening of the foreign reserves.

“There is so much technology available now to track such theft and there must be no more excuses for inaction.”

The event with the theme, ‘Pressing Forward; A National Posture to Rebuilding Nigeria’, featured stellar personalities at home and abroad.

Former President of Ghana John Mahama and the President of the Court of Appeal of Nigeria, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, were physically at the event while President Bola Tinubu was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun; Senate President Godswill Akpabio and his counterpart in the lower chamber Tajudeen Abbas were also represented at the event.

President of the Middle Belt Forum (MBF), Dr. Bitrus Pogu, has noted that the Middle Belt can and will never be part of an Arewa Republic, if the latter becomes a reality.

In an interview with VINCENT KALU, Dr. Pogu, a member of the eminent Nigerians group, the Patriots, noted that if the country is restructured and a people’s democratic constitution is put in place, all the separatist agitations across the country will die down.

He also called on President Bola Tinubu to dialogue with the leaders of the last #End bad governance protest.

A northern group recently declared Arewa Republic, drew a map, hoisted their flag, displayed their coat of arm and sang a national anthem. What are the implications of this?

That is treason. We have funny characters up here in the north. When former President Buhari was in office, things were not moving fine; the economy was in shambles and they suppressed everything, and our northern brothers stayed mute. It went above board when Sanusi Lamido, as deposed emir, had to speak out that it was not right for just some few people to be enjoying the national economy, collecting forex at official rate and enriching themselves while others remained poor. These things happened during Buhari’s regime and none of them even made the slightest of noise.

Now, President Tinubu came up, I didn’t him. My idea was that we should have a better Nigeria and we thought Peter Obi was a better candidate for that purpose. However the same people who were shouting, Muslim-Muslim ticket have now discovered that this man, in spite of his flaws, was not interested in dancing to the tune they were playing and heaven was let loose. In fact, before this protest, we got some information about destructive tendencies that were going to be unleashed on Nigeria. For what reason?

It means that anytime things don’t work their way, they want Nigeria to break up. It is unfortunate that we are still living with this archaic group of people who think that Nigeria belongs to them to dictate whatever they want and if doesn’t go their way; they fling before us the threat of breakup. Nigerians are wiser now and we would not take it from anybody. Whoever it is and for what reason they are doing whatever they are doing had better stop because Nigeria has gone beyond that level.

We as Nigerians resist any breakup, but if they want to go their own way, they should be allowed. In fact, to us they have been a thorn in our flesh; they can go their own way and let’s have our better Nigeria for Nigerians.

You are a leader of Middle Belt. The map of the Arewa Republic shows that the Middle Belt is part of the new Republic. What is your position on this?

That is a joke. We will never be part of what they are planning. We are Nigerians and we have always stood for Nigeria and we will continue to stand for Nigeria. We belong to this country and through sweat we will build the kind of country that would be beneficial to us. So, we are not part of whatever they have planned and are planning. Who among them did what they did? It is up to them, and we are not part of it and would not be part of it. It is unfortunate that the people who have been dominating the political space are now the ones saying that they want to go.

There are some separatist groups now saying they don’t want to continue to be part of Nigeria. What do you make of such agitations?

Thank God that the Fulani, who people are running away from, now also want to go. If they are talking of Arewa; who are the Arewa people? Arewa has been and it is still being dominated by the Fulani people. As we are saying no to what they are saying, when the chips are down, I can tell you that even our indigenous Hausa would come to say, no. You can go, you met us here; we are indigenous to this land, you are the ones who came here about 200 years ago and if you feel you want to go your way, we are sorry that we cannot dance to your tune. So, it is unfortunate that the people who have been dominating the political space are now the ones saying that they want to go.

If you look at those agitating, it is because the Fulani have not given anybody a breathing space and that is why they are doing what they are doing. Otherwise, nobody wants to leave his house for somebody else. We believe and strongly too that all these agitations would stop when the group that has been a headache to everybody is no more a threat to anybody.

I believe what President Tinubu is doing, though painful, is helping us to move in that direction. Some people may not agree because of the economy problem. If we look at it, how did it start? Someone was there for eight years and the economy became so bad and we pretended as if there was nothing wrong. We know what happened during the elections and we were watching the political developments during the elections. Even the colour of the currency was changed for some reasons. Before the primaries of the APC, there were so many funny things that happened. In spite of all that, this man emerged as the president and some funny appointments took place. People who are not Muslims thought that they would be dealt with, but suddenly we now found out that this man has come out and has played the Nigerian game and things started to change. We should what is there. The nature of the bad governance protest in the north is an indication that things are not the way they are supposed to be. So, let’s be focused and try to address the issues to ensure that things start working. Yes, there were agitations by different groups, but those agitations were agitations for a better share of the cake other than real separatist reasons.

I believe, whether it is Oduduwa Republic or whatever, when Nigeria starts operating as a true country, all of us irrespective of whether the person has Oduduwa or IPOB tendencies or whatever will fall in line and say, yes, we are Nigerians and we want to build this country.

The way forward is to restructure this country and to ensure we have a people’s democratic constitution so that people will have a sense of belonging and all the agitations from whichever quarter would die down and we’ll have a better Nigeria which we are advocating for.

The Patriots, of which you are a member, visited President Tinubu last Friday and demanded that he urgently start the process of having a people’s constitution. What informed this move?

I was part of the delegation. We believe strongly that Nigeria can be a better country for all Nigerians if we embrace the right kind of constitution and the reasons for our togetherness. Countries which are plural like Nigeria that ignored their plurality and adhered to strict constitutional rigidity broke up – Yugoslavia, Sudan and others are good examples.

Mr. President said he was going to ionately look into it with a view to addressing the issues bedeviling Nigeria so that we can have a better constitution that would address our plurality. Certainly, he said he would want to address the economy problem first before getting that done.

Mr. President has shown true interest and commitment towards ensuring that we have a people’s democratic constitution that will be able to address our myriad of problems caused by the kind of constitution we are now operating that doesn’t take into consideration our plurality and our diversity.

Leader of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Prof Ango Abdullahi recently called for a revisit of the 1914 Amalgamation Treaty to decide if the people want to continue to live together or go their separate ways. What is your take on this statement?

He may be part of the publication which we referred and to and which the Middle Belt has said they would not be a party to. When our Igbo brothers around the First Republic and all those coups decided to go their way, Nigeria fought vehemently to ensure that the country stayed together. It is unfortunate that somebody of his calibre would, for whatever reason, start beating the separatist drum. The truth remains, are we going to sit back and watch? When the Igbo were pushed to the wall and they decided to have Biafra and we went and messed them up. Up till today, the Igbo, a very progressive group known to everybody, are still being considered as second class citizens in their country. I don’t know how Nigerians will interpret what he has said. Time will tell whether a group can decide to walk away and we just sit down and watch or something else would happen.

I believe there are more people who believe in our unity than separation. For now, let’s just wait and see how things unfold. It is unfortunate to hear that kind of thing from somebody of that standing from the north.

The #Endbadgovernance protest put Nigeria on the edge. What do expect the government to urgently do?

During the visit of the Patriots to President Tinubu, this thing came up. The leaders of the group urged the government to engage the leaders of the protest in dialogue. The economic problems are real and addressing the issues at once is difficult, but there could be a way out. Maybe Mr. President lacks quality advice in addressing some of the issues. By dialoguing with the stakeholders of that protest, amicable solutions that would address the hunger in the country might be found. Dialoguing with the leaders of the protest is one way of addressing the issue raised by the protesters and in the activities which manifested during the protest.

Excerpt from the article:

"In order to distract from their failings, successive Nigerian presidents have exploited Nigeria’s ethnic and sectarian divisions. The problem grew especially bad under President Muhammadu Buhari, president of the country, between 2015 and 2023. Buhari was no stranger to ethnic and religious discord. As a young military officer in the late 1960s, Buhari was at the vanguard of the forces that perpetrated genocide against the largely Igbo population in the self-declared Republic of Biafra. After a half-century, his disdain for the country’s Christian and animist Igbo did not diminish. He facilitated the transit of Fulani militiamen to raid and murder the region’s Christians and designated the peaceful representatives of the Biafrans to be terrorists."

A group of prominent political leaders from the North emerged yesterday, named the League of Northern Democrats (LND), which said it would convene a strategic summit to revive the region’s political and economic place in Nigeria.

The group, which declared its intention to unite and reposition the North as a leading force in Nigeria’s political landscape, further revealed that its general concern is the development of Northern Nigeria, stressing that it does not represent the interest of anybody.

The 226-member group, led by former governor of Kano State, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, as interim chairman, Umar Ardo, as convener, and Hon. Emmanuel Jime as interim secretary, comprises former governors, federal lawmakers, and businessmen.

Besides Shekarau and Ardo, some of the top names in the group include Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, Sen. Ibrahim Ida, PhD, CON (Wazirin Katsina); Kabir Tafida (Sarki Fadan Sokoto); Falalu Bello; Dr. Jamilu Isyaka Gwamna (Sardauna Gombe); Emmanuel Jime and Mohammed Kumalia.

Others are Malam Salihu Lukman, Amb. Usman Sarki, Engr. Dallaji Noah, Prof. Usman Yusuf, Muktari Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Aminu Shehu Shagari, and Murtala Shehu Yar’adua (Tafidan Katsina), among others.

After a meeting at the Yar’adua Centre in Abuja, a communique said, “The LND resolved to prioritise the political unity of Northern Nigeria.

“Recognising the diverse backgrounds and experiences within our ranks, we are committed to fostering a strong sense of community and solidarity. This unity will be the foundation for our efforts to reposition the North as a leading force in Nigeria’s political landscape.”

They also resolved to write to critical stakeholders in Northern Nigeria to garner their and participation in the movement.

Those to reach out to include: all former Heads of State; all former and serving vice presidents; former Senate presidents; former Speakers of the House of Representatives; former Chief Justices; former Service Chiefs, Inspectors-General of Police, Comptrollers-General of Customs, Immigration, and Prisons; key distinguished elder statesmen, businessmen and employers of labour, trade unions and other relevant entities.

According to the group, the involvement of these stakeholders is crucial to the success of its mission.

Northern Nigerian Political Summit For Kaduna

The LND resolved to organise a Northern Nigerian Political Summit to be held in Kaduna.

The summit will serve as a platform for discussing the region’s political future, economic development and security challenges. It will bring together key leaders, thinkers and influencers to chart a new course for the North.

According to its communique, “The League of Northern Democrats is firmly committed to improving Northern Nigeria and the nation. The task is immense, but with determination, collaboration and strategic action, we believe we can achieve the transformative changes that the North and Nigeria urgently need. “We look forward to all ’ continued participation and as we work towards realising our shared vision.”

Responding to questions, Shekarau said the group’s general concern is about development in Northern Nigeria and not anybody’s interest.

He said the would come up with possible strategies on how to improve communities in the region through general societal reorientation and enlightening the people on what their primary challenges and their basic needs are.

He said they would educate the people on the need for good governance, the growth of the economy and wealth creation, relevance of education, security, and unity.

According to him, an electoral committee will be set up to sensitise elected leaders “so that they will appreciate the aspirations of the people.”

He stated that the main aim of seven committees to be set up would be to produce a document that “we can confront anybody seeking our votes, that these are the aspirations of our people. We want you to assure us that this will be part of your guiding principles.”

He added: “It is a political thought, not about any person or political party, and it is necessarily about 2027. It is an all-time issue. We want to produce a document which is not about a year, two-year, or 10-year issue.”

Speaking on the recent hardship protest, he said, “Government should see the protest against bad governance as a challenge. The speech of the President confirmed this, but we want to see action. And it is not about the federal government. We are talking about the state governments and local government

On his part, Umar Ardo said, “People of like minds from the North that came together to solve the northern problem. We are not worried about the problem of appointments; we are worried about the problems of insecurity, hunger, starvation, poverty, and the economy.

“We are not worried about appointments; appointments will come and go, but the important issue is to resolve this issue conclusively.”
