The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Abbas Tajudeen, says he has withdrawn the controversial Compulsory Voting Bill.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi on Monday, the Speaker stated that, “following extensive consultations with a broad spectrum of stakeholders, he has decided to withdraw the Bill to Amend the Electoral Act 2022 to make voting mandatory for all eligible Nigerians, which he co-sponsored with Hon. Daniel Adama Ago.”

According to him, from the outset, the Bill was introduced with the best of intentions, “to bolster civic engagement and strengthen our democracy by encouraging higher voter turnout.”

“Compulsory voting has long been practised with notable success in countries such as Australia, Belgium and Brazil, where it has helped sustain participation rates above 90 per cent, while nations like Argentina and Singapore have also implemented similar measures to foster inclusivity at the ballot box,” the statement added.

Speaker Abbas acknowledged that lawmaking is ultimately about the people and that any reform must respect individual freedoms and public sentiment.

Rather than compel participation, he said he was committed to exploring positive incentives and innovative approaches that will make voting more attractive and accessible to all Nigerians.

He added, “This withdrawal will allow time for further dialogue on how best to cultivate a culture of voluntary participation that honours both our democratic ideals and the rights of our citizens”.

If i must vote, let the vote count and let is not be a case of them writing figures with pen like APC did in Imo or thugs intimidating people like in Lagos.

Always copying the right thing for the wrong purpose. INEC and electoral reforms una no gree do but looking for people that will be party to una wuruwuru and magomago by force. Thunder fire you there.

Make the electoral processes free and fair, then watch every Nigerian of voting age be glad to participate.

Compelling us to vote is not the issue...will the votes count?

Make a law that addresses rigging. Strictly electronic voting.... everyone should see the results reflecting live as people vote.

Instead of making bills that will prohibit elected officials from decamping from the party that elected them until their tenure is finished.

They're busy on frivolity. Awon oniyeye

When the citizens see that their votes count, you don't need a bill to compel them to vote. They'll happily exercise their civic duties.

It's a distracting Bill they deliberately create to distract the people from the real issues..

I double dare them to compulsory transmission and recognition of results transmitted to Irev, and electronic voting..

These politicians will always put the cart before the horse. The countries he mentioned are already using electronic voting systems and their elections are mostly free and fair. Pursue reforms that will make elections free and fair before you start pushing for compulsory voting.
