LASEPA took strong action against noise pollution and other environmental infractions by sealing off several establishments such as religious centers, hotels, an eatery, and a bar in Alimosho today.

The affected establishments includes His Glory Cloud Church, Sure Word and Power Bible Church, Soliheena Central Mosque, Mountain of Power Deliverance, Cherubim & Seraphim Church, Iberuoluwa Mosque, Chirozz Hotel, Mayoral Hotel, West End Lounge & Bar, The Establishment Hotel, and Ayoola Foods.

These measures were put in place to address the identified instances of noise pollution and other environmental transgressions.

Lasepa has taken action against lots of churches, mosques, music stores, hotels, bars and factories that have been engaged in noise pollution and there are many nairaland threads about those incidents, so I'll encourage you to complain, because the system works.

What you are asking for already exists both at the federal and state levels.

Unfortunately I'm in transit at the moment, so I'm going to compose this post entirely from my memory, but I'll provide more information when I get to my destination.


The law that created the Nigerian Environmental Safety Regulatory Agency (NESREA) empowers it to set noise limits. Individuals and organisations must comply with this limit or they will be made to pay fines for every day that they contravene the regulation and they can also be jailed. Unfortunately I can't what the limit is.


In Lagos State, LASEPA has set a limit of 55 decibels during the day and 45 decibels at night. I watched an episode of Sunrise Daily (between 2005 and 2009) in which the then commissioner of environment, Dr Muiz Banire talked about noise pollution.

He said that he tested the generator in his home and discovered that he was contravening the law and he had to get it soundproofed. He said that citizens could complain to LASEPA and LASEPA would initially issue a warning to the defaulter to reduce the noise being emitted. Then they will conduct inspections to see if their warning is being complied with and lastly, they will seal the property if the problem continues.

Noise pollution starts from 55 decibels during the day and 45 decibels at night!

Common Sources of Noise and Decibel Levels
Sound is measured in decibels (dB). A whisper is about 30 dB, normal conversation is about 60 dB, and a motorcycle engine running is about 95 dB. Noise above 70 dB over a prolonged period of time may start to damage your hearing. Loud noise above 120 dB can cause immediate harm to your ears.

All generators without soundproofing would the limit of 45 decibels at night. So don't be surprised if LASEPA visits you one day. Person wey go report you never arrive!

Mosque are encouraged to use indoor loudspeakers and limited their speeches to what is needed! You don't need speakers to supplicate. Allah is All-Hearing, He hears the voice of the ants in the deepest part of the soil!

Abu Mūsa al-Ash‘ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: We were on a journey with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and whenever we ascended from a valley we would say "there is no god but Allah" and "Allah is the Greatest" and we would raise our voices. So the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people, do not trouble yourselves too much. He Whom you are calling is not deaf or absent. Verily, He is with you, He is All-Hearing and Ever Near."

Churches need not sing and clap for outsiders to hear!

Just because you are going scot-free now doesn't mean you're not guilty of the offense! And it's not that the reporters are witch-hunting you.

West End lounge is not the only hotel/lounge that causes traffic along that Akowonjo axis. How come they close West End and they don't close other hotels closeby who also constitute serious noise pollution and traffic issues along the axis?

We have like more than 10 churches in our street and 2 Mosques, down within the area, sleep was never an option because those churches will never stop during 7 days night prayers.

You will see a shopping complex with 5 floors having 4 churches occupying the building
