The Federal Government has blamed the high poverty rate in the country on the failure of the State Governments to contribute their quota of development responsibilities to the grassroots where the major production activities take place, IGBERETV reports.

Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Clement Agba, stated this to State House Correspondents after the week's Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Agba was responding to a question demanding to know what he and his colleague, the Minister of Financial, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, were doing to ameliorate the biting hardship facing the majority of Nigerians at the moment.

The Minister, who attempted to defray the notion that rising levels of hunger and lack were peculiar to Nigeria, explained that the Federal Government, through many of its social security programmes, has been dedicating resources to alleviating hardship on the public, but noted that state governments, which have been consistently receiving their shares of national resources, had been misdirecting the resource to project that have almost no direct effect on the needs of the people.

He pointed out that 72 percent of the poverty in Nigeria is found in the rural areas, which he said had been abandoned by governors, adding that the state executives prefer to function in the state capitals.

He lamented that state governors are concentrating on building flyovers, airports and other projects that are visible in the state capitals rather than investing in areas that directly uplift the standard of life of the people in the rural areas.

Agba pointed out that while states are in charge of land for agriculture, they do not invest in them for the desired effect on their rural citizens.

He advised Governors that rather than concentrate attention on the building of sky scrappers, flyovers and bridges, they should focus on initiatives that can pull the majority of the people out of poverty.

This is true. Rural dwellers have suffered too much in the hands of politicians. Their only crime is that they refused to migrate to urban centres.

The FG is right. There are so many things you see goIng wrong in these states, and immediately we'll be blaming Buhari and the FG. Blaming the 'Nigerian government'. Such and such is wrong in my LGA because 'Nigeria is failed'.

But Nigeria has nothing to do with your problem.

The FG gives your state monthly allocation to the tune of tens of billons of naira each month. Money to take care of those problems!

And the thing is that the state governments have long known that the people generally blame Abuja for every problem in the country, and this has provided a cushion for them against potential backlash in their states over misplaced priorities in their spending, and embezzlement of funds.

Then why did we blame Jonathan/pdp for the bad economy and poverty then?

Apc is ment undecided

The states are not responsible for the dollars rate,

The state are not responsible for inflation.

THE state arent responsible for the bad security situation that has left farmers with no jobs cos of bandits and herdsmen.

The state aren't responsible for the redundant policies, corruption and mismanagement of funds by the FG.

The state aren't responsible for oil theft, depleted foreign reserves, atrocious debts and economic failure.

Abi, flyover etc is what Nigerians want to see. Instead of investments in education, roads to villages where farmers could bring out their produce etc. Basic foundations that will eliminate poverty.
Rather the will say Obi did not build bridge etc.

The worst government in the history of Nigeria. How Buhari was able to break his horrible record as military head of state needs to be studied. You can't tell me this wasn't deliberate.Man has been consistent in his pursuit of making Nigerians totally poor.

Buhari have never said for one day to hold him able for anything, Even some of his Northern brothers said they got their fingers burnt by ing him. in 2015-2019 he keeps blaming PDP for everything, now he is pushing the blame to the state Governors.

So the state governors are responsible for hyper inflations?

They are the ones that locked the borders?

They are the ones that made dollars to hit record high?

If you ever queue up to vote for APC know that you are an Enemy of the state. Well, unless you are buying from a different market.

Was Goodluck Jonathan the state governor of 36 states and FCT when this same government was blaming him? Was PDP in charge of all states when the APC government said "blame it on PDP's 16 years?

I think I wholeheartedly agree with this. Nigerians have been overlooking the state governors excesses and inadequacies due to the hatred for the federal government.
If the governors have been complementing the little inadequate efforts the FG have been making to reduce or eradicate poverty in the land, things would not have been like this.
Lets start focusing and beaming our searchlight on the activities on the governors to push them to alleviate poverty instead of always shouting "Federal government, Federal government" always

Coming from the same govt whose only bragging rights is infrastructure
The irony
Over to Wike the flyover builder

All those above ing the FG's stance should know this has been the default mode of successive FG govts since 1999. Blame the states when anything goes wrong even in matters the states have no wherewithal.
Over half of the nation's revenue allocation goes to FG. 100% foreign reserve, ECA, NLNG dividends etc yet the FG blames states who collect pittance compared to it for things going wrong and hallelujah boys come to prove to us why states rather than FG should be held responsible.
Poverty is truly a weapon the rich use to control the poor.

You've tried enough to educate some of these fellas...

Perhaps, they just want to follow the bandwagon that the federal government is always right.

Even though virtually all the state governors are working below par..

No sense of direction to prioritize their dealings..

What a nation!
