Sixty years after the suspension of registration of cattle, sheep and goats coming from neighboring countries, the Federal Government is to re-introduce the policy to curb spread of livestock diseases across the country, the government disclosed this at the weekend.

It also unveiled plans to review government policies on the movement of cattle, sheep and goats between Nigeria and neighboring countries.

The Minister of Agriculture, Alhaji Sabo Nanono, while speaking at the inauguration of the governing council of the Nigerian Veterinary Council five years after the previous one was disbanded, said, “As a ministry, we are taking steps to re-introduce the registration of cattle and sheep coming into the country.”

He further disclosed that the ministry was in the process of presenting funding request to Federal Executive Council to tackle pest and diseases across the country, saying as soon as the approval got, implementation would begin to contain the diseases.

The minister also pointed out that the sector had been witnessing increasing investment in the last five years, adding, “As veterinarians, you must be interested that many developments are coming into the sector, and you start thinking of how to key into the developments that are coming into the country.”

The FG was never interested in enforcing the laws regulating these foreign herdsmen. Its funny how the thread of pandemics like anthrax really put things in perspective. Lol they should've mentioned how they plan on enforcing these rules.

1998 transhumance protocol:

i. Each country sets its entry and exit;
ii. Each defined state reception areas;
iii. Travel must take place along roads defined by the States;
iv. Border crossing should be done in days;
v. Finally, to cross borders ,the transhumant should be equipped with an international transhumance certificate (ITC). In this certificate the stockbreeder must declare all his animals, certifying their immunization and define its route. source

What prompted them to stop the first time?

The only left to be done is to ground the cities. World economy is on a nose dive heading for the rocks. Governments are lost and bravery is all that's left.

A shut down is what's neccessary now.

I fear for Lagos. I hope it doesn't break bad.

The economy is taking because panic culture set in. Life is returning to normal in japan. The rest of the world is struggling because the didn't take rational steps like shutting borders and travel restrictions early. The best thing to do now is wash hands and avoid sick people. The Wu flu talk is honestly boring now. The meme are still nice.

How many people can the government feed?

Chinese supplied food across the country....To everyone...

The FG, already complained of worker's salary, let alone to sustain the people...

Nigeria needs to learn from US experience.

Every shot towards the pandemic before arrival failed on arrival. Sacrifices needs to be made. It's better hunger kills people at home than for the hidden virus to break lose. The casualties of bad break will be exponential of what hunger will do. A 2 weeks shut down will contain the virus as symptoms would have been exhibited to fish out infected persons.

I hope our case won't be the case of "Had I known"

Lagos alone is a highly volatile center, with our infrastructure and social state, am certain we will record breaking counts if it bursts.

Hope you get my point. It's a situation we have to make sacrifices irrespective of anybody's opinion

A stitch in time, .......
