Divers have recovered more than 31 bodies from Lake Victoria after a party boat capsized in one of Uganda's deadliest maritime disasters.

The toll is expected to rise.

The boat, MV Templa was said to be carrying more than 100 people, twice its capacity, when it overturned late Saturday evening.

"Such boats cannot carry more than 50 people,'' said lawmaker Johnson Muyanja, who represents part of the district of Mukono, the site of the accident.

"Here we don't have limits.

Our problem is that we don't have control.''

The boat, MV Templa was in poor condition, had been grounded for some time and lacked a valid license to operate, authorities said.

Marine police tried to prevent the boat from embarking on the cruise, but they were overwhelmed by the presence of two local princes among the engers, they said.

The boat had been grounded for safety reasons and had recently undergone repairs to fix holes in its hull, authorities said.

One reason many people died was likely "intoxication,'' said Asuman Mugenyi, national director of police operations.

Citing the s of some survivors, he said there were life jackets that engers neglected to wear.

The boat's engers, in a party mood, likely panicked when the vessel started to sink, he said.

Images of people on the boat were posted on social media shortly before the incident.

Among the many tragic stories was one of a man who went out to help rescue people and drowned when he was dragged underwater by a desperate enger.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni said on Twitter that he had ordered the electronic registration and monitoring of all boats "so that we can know who is where on the lake and why."

"Obviously, the operators of this boat will be charged with criminal negligence and manslaughter, if they have not already been punished for their mistake by dying in the accident," he said. "Let everybody take the warning from this tragedy."

A boat that is meant for just 50 people. How on earth do you think this can accommodate more than 100......
May there souls rest in peace.

I can't help but laugh at the bolded, their dotard of a President is a comedian really undecided

Lake Victoria? Is that a good reason for the Ugandan navy to deploy Victorian era wooden canoes for the rescue?

Two critical point here. Firstly, the boat carried more than hundred people twice it's capacity which they were impervious to and also lacked valid licence to operate. That was a total negligence on their part. Sad one.

Three takeaways:

1. This is "common Uganda", they have deep sea divers. Even the water is in decent shape unlike our own beaches which are usually brown.

2. An helicopter was deployed to d area but if na my country, one politician would have rented it from Lagos to Kano.

3. The area around the shore is neat and not littered. Go to most beaches in Lagos, very dirty despite the fact that they charge you to enter.

RIP to the dead.

If you can't stand the heat stay out of the kitchen.

Why would you go out on a boat if you can't swim.

Also, what happened to the inflatable tubs and life jackets?
