I feel the reason for the problems Nigeria is facing is tribalism and religion....

Do you think it would be better if we all were of the same tribe and same religion?

No, tribes and religion are not the problems, our leaders and we ourselves are the problems. Ahmadu Bello Sardauna of sokoto managed to lead the northern region with outstanding success despite its tribal and religious difference. why can't the present leaders do the same?

I think they both have their merits,The problem is not than nigeira is multicultural but the point is our thinking and orientations as individuals.Their should be freedom to choose one's religion,besides the religion which is our main problem is Islam and they have it in their quran
(Qur'an 2:256)There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong. So whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold with no break in it. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.

Their is obviously strenght in diversity,in an homogenous society the thinking is thesame and it's my belief that when people think and reason thesame way then obviously only one of them is needed.

I think ignorance again is another problem,each one of us should realise we didnt choose our race,ethnicity,nationality,families etc at birth,we were born into them(I'm a yoruba but I could have been born as Hausa or Igbo,so why should I be bothered about my tribe then when I didnt choose it,I'm not better of because of my tribe).Infact most of us didnt choose our religion,we are born into it.So this things shouldnt realy count.

So in Nigeria our problem is our inability to synergize and synergy is all about valuing the difference,a diverse society will achieve more due to the differences,it provides a lot of options.


E.g there are certain sport games that some tribes are better than the others,so the better ones will give the country a good representation in international games.

So my point is just that each tribe has it own weakness and strength,each one will compensate for the other's weakness.


So Nigeria is better off if we synergise rather than break away.

The dominant identity in the US for a long time was WASPs (white anglo-saxon protestants).

Non-WASP white people have been WASPed over time, absorbed into this dominant culture.

There are fringe elements of diversity I guess, but it hasn't really changed the fortunes of the US in an overwhelmingly positive manner, imo

Our problems are foolish characters found in some people in the society. You will still see someone discriminating another because the person is short, should we all be of the same height? @op this question of yours makes no sense. Neighbouring communities in Nigeria of the same tribe fight against each other

the problem of nigeria and any other society with multi-ethnic and multi-religeous systems is just a lack of peaceful co-existence and tolerance. Until we see ourselves as brothers and sisters and eliminate that mentality of feeling superior to others, which is only based on vanity, we can never see eye to eye. Despite our differences, we can let go of the radicality and extremism which on breed tension and conflict fuelled by fanatism and tribal and religeous. No matter what we do, we all can never be equal on the same scale, wet irrespective of that we all must show mutual respect and just ignore those who try to make trouble.

Diversity has it merits and demerits. Its not going to be if we were all one tribe and religion. Check out America, india, china and the likes, they are far away doing well with the strenght in their diversified culture, tribes, origins, lifestyles, religions e.t.c. Nigeria on the other hand derives pleasure in tribalism as most nairalanders display on net instead of putting together our strenght in diversity, harness it for the betterment of everyone. When we dont show our corrupt leaders that we are ready to move forward and leave tribalism, how do you think they would stop milking the masses. The problem with us doesnt lie in being one religion or tribe buh being one in of goals. Yoruba hating igbos, igbos hating hausas, hausas hating yorubas e.t.c, how would we all progress with hate in our minds? Check it out o0. One who progresses is one who doesnt hate even if hated. I don't think we would be better off religion and tribe. Mind you, there is no nation in the world with a single religion. Even down to the Arab world(islamic state). There is still some level of other religion like christianity done either legally or illegally. So emphasis should be made more on tribe and not the other way round. Rochas Okorocha once said "The problem of Nigeria is that Nigerians don't know its problem." but i'm rephrasing that statement by saying "The problem of Nigeria is Nigerians." no doubt we have 250 ethnic groups and linguistic diversitics. But that does not erase the fact that we're not the only country in the continent of africa that has diverse ethnicity. The difference is that they are able to put theirself together. That is where "love" play its part. Also, there is a synergy between the government and the people. Unlike what we have here in Nigeria. It'll interest you to know that english is not the only language spoken in U.S.A. But whatever happens the citizens would always say "God bless America" how many Nigerians would do same for Nigeria. The president is doing his best to put the country together despite the challenges yet there're some religious and ethnic bigots that never for once stop to insults him. Even here on Nairaland. No wonder he came up to say that he's the most insulted president in the world. When there is a bomb-blast in one part of the country, less than 10mins we'll see people start posting pictures on the internet, it would be all-over the social-media. Thereby creating a bad image for Nigeria and Nigerians abroad. Things happens in different parts of the world but it is not everything that happens that eventually ends up on the internet. That is what Nigerians don't understand. It is we(Nigerians) that are creating a bad image for our country and not necessarily tribe or religion. If we all come together and say there would be more love and no violence, tribalism, bomb-blast and less report of happenings in Nigeria to the world. I belive Nigeria would be a safer and better place for all. Once again i say the problem of Nigeria is Nigerians.
