NIGERIANS ARE HUNGRY, SULTAN OF SOKOTO LAMENTS, URGES CUSTOMS TO LIFT BAN ON IMPORTATION OF RICE written by Our Reporter June 14, 2016 UMOBILE_600X90B The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has urged the Nigeria Customs Service to consider lifting the ban on importation of rice through the land borders. The Sultan made the call when the Comptroller-General of the Service, Col. Hameed Ali (retd), visited him in his palace in Sokoto on Monday. He said that the order had brought hardship on the Nigerian masses as it had aggravated scarcity of the commodity in the country. ”The policy should be revisited with a view to make amends and ameliorate the suffering of Nigerians,” he added. The sultan said that he had been receiving “cries’’ from the masses on their plight over hardship in the land, and appealed to the service to address the issue urgently. ”There is no food in the country hence the need for the borders to be reopened for rice importation,” he said. He, however, commended the renewed efforts of the Federal Government to boost domestic production of rice. The monarch assured that the traditional institution would continue to sensitize the people to the need to the policies of government at all levels. He condemned smuggling and charged the service to mobilize the people to offer information that could aid the arrest and prosecution of perpetrators. ”Nigerians must be duly informed about the negative effect smuggling has on the nation’s economy,” he said. Earlier, Ali had said that he was in Sokoto to effectiveness of enforcement of the ban on rice importation through land borders. He said that the order was a measure by the Federal government to encourage and protect local production of the commodity. Ali solicited the of the Sultanate council in ensuring the success of the fight against smuggling. http://pointblanknews.com/pbn/exclusive/nigerians-hungry-sultan-sokoto-laments-urges-customs-lift-ban-importation-rice/ 1 Like |

The last time there was hike in price of imported rice. The effect was so highly felt in the North, so much that the Sultan of Sokoto had to intervene. The North depends highly on foreign rice to to complement whatever they produce. SW not only depend on Foreign rice, they also depend on Kebbi for local rice. This is the reality on ground, not some silly stats made up by an Afonja Muslim called Sule to get his fellow afonjas thumping their chests like chimpanzees. 1 Like |

opeaceo: The cost of production is extremely high here. And since there is no massive demand to make up for the high production cost, the price is better left high. That way farmers won't run bankrupt. |

Nigeria is one of the biggest rice producers in Africa. Despite this fact, it`s also the largest rice importers in Africa. It`s an essential cash crop for small-scale producers! What can we notice in the Nigeria Rice production statistics? Over the past decade, the rice consumption rates have risen rapidly. According to Stanley Nkwazema from This Day Live, only in the last decade, the consumption rate has risen to 7 million Metric Tons. Still, only 2.7 million metric tons are produced by Nigerian farmers. According to the Index Mundi, this number has risen to 2.772 million metric tons. This means that even the increase in rice production in Nigeria still leaves a significant gap of 4.2-4.3 million metric tons. Therefore, Nigeria is only able to supply 49% of the domestic demand. Per capita consumption rate of rice is about 27 kilograms, according to Stanley Nkwazema. The statistic of rice production in Nigeria clearly shows a 5% increase every year. For the first half of this year, it has already risen by 2.67%, according to the Index Mundi. The Industry Reports also shows the fluctuation of the local commodity production to be between 2,400 to 3,600 in the past five years. The import rates have also increased to 5,850 from 4,800 during the same period of time. Rice Production Statistics in the States Only eight states out of 36 can be considered heavy producers of rice. These states include: - Anambra; - Nassarawa; - Ebonyi; - Kaduna; - Niger; - Kano; - Kaduna; - Benue. According to the Nigeria rice production statistics, the imports have started to make up 50% of the local consumption rates. Currently, Nasarawa State is the leader when it comes to rice production in Nigeria. It has over 10,000 fully irrigated rice hectares, according to Stanley Nkwazema. Anambra State is a clear miracle of rice production in Nigeria. The industrial rice farms have already pushed the rice production of the State from 90,000 metric tons to 210,00 metric tons. Stanley Nkwazema informs that with this capacity, production will soon reach 320,000 metric tons. Therefore, it will reach and then sur the rates of consumption of rice in Adamawa State. When this number is reached, it will show a clear victory over consumption rates. The Global rice production statistics show that the top five importers of Nigeria are the USA, Vietnam, India, Thailand, and Brazil. These countries help Nigeria to overcome the shortfall of over 4.3 million metric tons. This shortfall is valued over N365 billion. This great sum of money is needed to meet Nigerian demand of over 7 million metric tons. Why Nigeria can`t meet its own Rice demand. According to the Chairman of the Export Group of Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (NACCIMA), Ade Adefeko, the rice producers in Nigeria have to overcome great challenges to meet the market demands. One of these challenges is the inadequate irrigation techniques. The low levels of technologies can`t result in a high yield! Therefore, the rice farmers are not able to fight against the impact of birds, insects, and weeds. There are also other drawbacks which keeps Nigeria from being able to supply its own demand for rice. According to Ade Adefeko, these drawbacks include: - Poor quality control practices; - Poor drying techniques; - Poor sorting drying techniques; - Power failures in some regions of the country; Ade Adefeko also disclosed that the problems of rice production are horrible for the end s. Due to the chaotic chain of suppliers, the end- has to get the end product through a number of the middle-men. Therefore, the price of the end-product is pretty high. Ade Adefeko, in his interview on This Day Live also pointed out that Nigeria keeps is working towards getting out from the rice import dependency, but the progress is too slow. The government of Nigeria may try to change the situation with agricultural loans or rice production loans. https://www.google.com.ng/url?q=https://www.naij.com/1114914-nigeria-rice-production-statistics.html&sa=U&ved=0ahUKEwi_qKH3hMvVAhVDPxoKHdyqCiQQFgguMAA&usg=AFQjCNGxm27VdsCgeHeJff_mCRdNZlAw 1 Like 1 Share |

Afam4eva:I believe it is enough and more than enough to consider the North as the country's greatest asset 'just because they produce most of what we eat'. The oil in The Delta does not benefit the people, save the government who sells it and keeps the money. Even in the face of resource control, another form of government would still be in charge and not the man whose land oozes with crude unending. Last I checked, I still buy fuel weekly and the money does not return to my pocket. Let's be frank with one another, the oil in itself is only beneficial to a handful of Northern Elites and a couple of Igbo folks and Yoruba folks as well. Proceeds from agriculture is the reason the Obafemi Awolowo University is standing today and it is the reason the SW metamorphosed into a region of book lovers. My point is, agriculture might not be our primary cash cow, but it does not take away the fact that it plays a more vital role in Nigeria than oil in itself. Do we still export cash crops? Yes, we do, and while it is not what it used to be, we barely look towards that angle because we get it cheap. Believe me, it would be MI:VII for Cameroon to primarily take up the responsibility of providing for Nigeria should the North say no today because we would put into consideration how much food it has for its people before thinking of others. I'd the video and share the link tomorrow to see the effect of food shortage on a large scale. That the North is doing us a favour is an understatement. |

nototribalist:Lagos rice wasn't a scam. It was sold in December, during Christmas and the reason was to unsettle the the pressure of rice scarcity. And knowing that rice is just about the major staple food eaten during Christmas, what you call scam was more or less a special agricultural intervention. Chances are that it would pop up again this year. 1 Like |

pazienza: Oga stop grasping at straws. The OP never said nigeria was self sufficient in rice production. infact that was everything his intro was all about. It is there stated specifically that Nigeria imports rice to augment its local production, and that local production remains grossly insufficient. The reason why people seem to be taking a Jab at the SE is because of how the Igbos have in the past mocked the SW for not producing rice. I a thread where they were like, "Afonja, we have seen rice from the North and the East also produces rice in commercial quantity", When will you Afonjas start producing your own rice". "Afonjas are lazy, they can't even grow anything" bla bla bla. Yeah, they said it. So it comes as a surprise to everyone when an updated list of the to rice producing states and regions come out and the much touted SE falls short of its already bloated imagery. 2 Likes |

I'm here to make sure you lots burn from your hate, stop feigning neutral, you are no better than them. How old is the information he is providing? How accurate are they, seeing as they are tainted by the hands of Yorubas handling them. Sanchez01:You need to understand my perspective. Awolowo used agriculture (cocoa) to better his people because it was the main source of revenue for the western region. it was not because they were selling chocolate to all of us. On the contrary, even the north doesn't make so much from the agricultural proceeds and it does not even to up to 10% of their IGR (Oil from ND does). The reason why you can't consider them an asset is that their agricultural prowess does not benefit the south just as much as the rice from indonesia cannot be said to be of benefit to us because we buy it with our hard earned money. 3 Likes |
