This was what led to the US-EU-NATO-sponsored Euromaidan protests of 2013. The EU deal involved the then Ukrainian president selling Ukrainian national assets to EU oligarchs and US banks in exchange for promises to NATO. Promises, not assurances. Promises.

Meanwhile, the Russia deal was very cheap gas, more money, more development and cooperation between both countries, and guarantees that Ukraine will not NATO.
