The Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) has agreed to pay the N45.9 billion awarded to the Ogoni people of Rivers state as compensation for oil spills in their communities.

While addressing Ahmed Mohammed, judge of a federal high court in Abuja, on Wednesday, A.O Ejelamo, lawyer to Shell, said the company has resolved to pay the monetary compensation awarded in 2010.

This is a good development. My fear right now is that when this money is paid it might not get to the communities that have been affected badly by these spills. Na one politician/big man go syphon the money.

Unfortuntely,there will be controversy in sharing the fund.
The right thing should be a demand for Shell to build developmental infrastructures that will have a life long impact worth that amount in the communities.

They should use part of that money to clean up their messy environment. Thanks to South South leaders, people and Nigerian government, Shell can now do whatever they like because they know they can get away with it. Taking this oil-spill case to the UK was the best decision the affected community made.
